AREA 2000A causa dell’insistente pioggia non è stato possibile proseguire l’indagine durante tutta la mattinata; lo scavo è stato ripreso nel pomeriggio. L’attenzione è stata rivolta allo scheletro in connessione USk 2481 il quale è stato documentato e rimosso; durante la rimozione è stata rinvenuta un’ulteriore medaglietta votiva in bronzo associata al rosario posto tra le mani sul bacino. La pulizia delle vertebre ha permesso di accertare che in vita l’individuo era affetto di dish vrtebrale, come ipotizzato ieri. Today, we defined a cut that is oriented west-east that is in Area 1000. Only the top layers of fill were removed, only exposing a few bones, before it started raining and work stopped. The skeleton that is in the southwest corner of 2000B, was removed. While the bones were being removed, it was discovered that the radius, ulna, and pelvis were all fused together because of the burning. Once all the bones were removed, pieces of lime were discovered, most likely from the I unexcavated parts of a previously excavated cholera grave.The burial that is in the western expansion was fully excavated, documented, and removed. During excavation, it was noticed that the spine showed signs of D.I.S.H. |
AREA 3000Nonostante la pioggia è stato comunque possibile completare la messa in luce dell’inumato USK 3449, orientato W-E e deposto in decubito dorsale in US - 3447, nella porzione nord-orientale dell’area di indagine. Si tratta di un individuo adulto di sesso maschile e di notevole robustezza e statura, collocato all’interno di una cassa lignea. La decomposizione del corpo in spazio vuoto ha determinato lo spostamento ed il collasso di gran parte delle ossa: il cranio è ruotato all’indietro, il torace è appiattito e l’avambraccio sinistro è scivolato verso il basso. La posizione dei metacarpali di entrambe le mani sembra suggerire che gli arti superiori fossero leggermente flessi sul basso ventre, mentre quelli inferiori sono distesi, con il piede destro appoggiato alla parete orientale della fossa. Del piede destro sono stati rinvenuti solamente due sesamoidi. Nella porzione centro-settentrionale del settore si è proceduto con la documentazione e la rimozione dell’individuo USK 3432, orientato N-S e deposto supino all’interno di US – 3430.
The day began by removing and documenting skeletons in the north central area along the medieval wall. In one of the burials, a bead was found alongside the carpels. The skeleton (3449) oriented west east along the northeast section of sector B was also prepared for removal and documentation. The skeleton(3449) was unusual because it was missing a left foot and pelvis, however, a sacrum was still present. By the end of the day, sector B was throughly cleaned to expose more contexts.Tomorrow, we continue to remove the skeleton and uncover more burials in sector B. |
AREA 4000Nella porzione orientale dell’area il lavoro sulla fossa US -4183 è proseguito con la rimozione della riduzione US 4210 localizzata ai piedi della sepoltura USk 4209. Quest’ultima deve ancora essere messa completamente in luce, ma il contesto in cui si trova permette di confermare ancora una volta l’attitudine degli abitanti medievali del chiostro relativa al riutilizzo sistematico delle sepolture più antiche a favore delle successive inumazioni. Nel settore settentrionale è iniziata la rimozione di US 4213, il probabile riempimento della fossa US -4212, taglio orientato est-ovest e dalla larghezza maggiore rispetto alle sepolture finora individuate, fattore che potrebbe indicare la presenza di due inumazioni una successiva all’altra e molto ravvicinate. L’individuo USk 4821, nell’angolo nord occidentale dell’area, sta venendo messo ulteriormente in luce, individuando una sovrapposizione delle ossa carpali destre sulla fibula sinistra, indicante una possibile posizione a braccia incrociate dell’inumato. Sulla fascia occidentale del settore è ripresa l’indagine di US 4193, uno strato argilloso marrone scuro, fortemente rettangolare ed orientato nord-sud, in continuità con la fossa della succitata USk 4821, potrebbe dunque trattarsi dell’interfaccia superiore del riempimento di una nuova sepoltura.
In Area 4000 we began by bailing out the rainwater which accumulated from last night's rain. After the area was clear we once again began removing the fill US 4178. We finished uncovering the reduction US 4210 and the skeleton USK 4209. Once the GIS lab recorded the burial's location and photographs were taken we began to remove the reduction. We believe that several embedded bones under the reduction belong to USK 4209 but further excavation must be done. In the western section, we thoroughly trowel cleaned in hopes of finding the cuts of two monks buried parallel to the cloister wall. However, during cleaning we could not find two distinct cuts therefore further excavation must be done. Also in the south western corner of area 4000, we hypothesize that we may have found another cut where the cloister wall once stood. Tomorrow, we will be doing further excavation in this area. We once again set out to uncover the cuts in US 4213 that were concealed by the rain. After establishing the cut from yesterday we leveled out the fill and started to define the bones we uncovered. While it does look like a definite burial we have yet to determine whether it is primary or secondary. Tomorrow we hope to uncover more bones in the fill and establish an answer. |
AREA 5000La pioggia di questa mattina non ci ha permesso di sfruttare la completa giornata lavorativa. Abbiamo comunque cominciato la rimozione di US 5019, la grande chiazza costituita da sedimento scuro e carboncini che ricopre la porzione N-E dell'area. Inoltre, è stato rimosso quasi completamente il riempimento della trincea di età contemporanea che taglia in direzione nord-sud tutta l'area 5000. Infine è cominciata la pulizia dell'angolo N-W che sta mettendo in evidenza delle tracce riferibili ad una struttura muraria orientata in senso E-W e che si estendono sotto la sezione W dell'area di scavo.
Today in area 5000 excavations were yet again delayed due to inclement weather. Bailing water commenced in the midafternoon and a few brief hours were spent excavating features. The trench dug in the 1950s for a water line running into the modern cemetery was completely excavated and the fill covering the pipe returned discoveries of pottery, bone fragment, metal and modern knick knacks. A second trench just south of the central wall is shallow and of unknown origin. It runs from the wall to the mortar pit and is filled with dark brown sandy silt with slate and brick inclusions. Artifacts include glass metal and pottery slag, as well as glass, metal and pottery. Large amounts of marble fragments were also present. We do not yet know if this trench is artificial or natural but further excavation will be conducted. Hopefully sunny weather will lead to further excavation and more answers. |
