CAMPAGNA DI SCAVO 2015

AREA 2000

After first uncovering the area 2000 A, we cleaned the surface of with trowels, avoiding protruding bones. Any bones found out of context were promptly bagged. We sprayed the surface of the soil with water to reveal any coloration differences to see if there were any visible burial cuts. The center portion of area 2000 A had a darker coloration, differing from the reddish color on the western and eastern portions. This variation suggests possible burial areas. The darker area also had the highest concentration of visible bones, supporting this assumption. By outlining the bones using a wooden bone tool and a soft brush, we revealed a conglomeration of burials. We uncovered two articulated partial skeletons and three other potential individuals, later numbered 2516, 2518, 2519, 2520, and 2521. One of the articulated skeletons seemed to be associated with a copper alloy pendant, yet to be identified. A partial skeleton seems to be buried prone and a femur and humerus were found directly on top of each other. These unusual orientations may suggest a secondary burial or mass grave, but that is yet to be supported. At the end of the day, we exposed what appears to be a subadult mandible with associated deciduous teeth, located by the midshaft of an articulated tibia and fibula of another individual. All exposed bone was on the same level. After we ended the day’s excavation, pictures were taken of this level and GIS coordinates were taken for mapping purposes. Tomorrow we plan to remove the exposed bone to explore the layer underneath and look for any other burial cuts.

AREA 3000

Today, in area 5000, we finished reopening the site.  We cleared the backfill and lifted the tarp. Once the area was exposed, we lightly troweled to clear any excess debris to better expose features of past field seasons. The GIS team then reset coordinates and spiked them into the ground.  After this preliminary cleaning, we again lightly scraped the area to gain a better understanding of different soil types and reveal the remaining post-holes that were left uncovered.  During this time, we removed all the remaining vegetation from the area. While in the process of cleaning, a stripe of dark soil was revealed, running parallel to the existing wall feature. Once this was finished, the day ended with the entire area being dampened in preparation for GIS work, including full area photography and digital plotting of points through out the site.
