Today we continued excavation. Max and Courtney continued excavating their grave in the northwest of area 2000, which appears to contain the long bones of multiple individuals. The grave in the northeast section is still in the prossess of being excavated by Kit and Morgan. Jaidee finished excavating a grave in the east-central, which we then took coordinates of. Shelby continued excavating a grave in the southeast portion of area 2000, in which she exposed several long bones, some teeth, and fragments of a skull. She also found some pottery. Vicky found some medium to large rocks, bricks, slate, and a piece of chalk. We determined that her area was a part of a trench and not a grave. |
Today was an exciting day in Area 3000. Our team members engaged in various individual projects, joint projects and GIS and osteology lab activities. Group 2 continued the work they began the prior day. This included extending the excavation towards the east by taking down part of the eastern wall directly associated with the burial. The exavation revealed a number of disarticulated elements which were not in anatomical association. It appears that these elements constitute part of the fill for the burial. This has occured because one burial has been cut and reused as burial fill for the primary burial. The elements in the fill comprised (in part) of a tibia indicating that more than one individual was present. The eastern cut of the burial has complete articulation of the left and right tibia, fibula, and potentially the feet (the primary individual for the burial). During excavation it was noted that the distal epiphyses of the tibia were unfused and a separate unfused proximal epihysis of a phalax was recovered. This indicates the individual is subadult. Due to previous excavation of subadult and infant burials in the southeast corner of the site, it is likely that this area was reserved for children. Group 3 continued to excavate the sub-adult in the southern middle of sector B. We continued to clean the surrounding area and the filling off the bones. We took photographs once it was cleaned then started to carefully remove the bones from the cut. We then cleaned the cut for photos. Tomorrow we will begin a new area. Group 4 scaped the middle western portion of Sector B and was able to identify the limits of another possible burial: after recording it as a new filll layer and provided a photografic documentation, its excavation began. We were able to apprecite how this layer differs from the surroudings in terms of colour, consistency and composition. It was dark brown, rich in clusters of small stones and fragmented bricks, with bones emerging from its surface.

On this the fourth day of the field school, area five thousand was short two members because one member was in the osteology lab, and the other was in the GIS lab. Half of the remaining members finished excavating the four potential post holes in section B from yesterday and one additional post hole. The remainder of these excavations turned up pottery, faunal remains, glass shards of various colors, a partial metal tool, structural elements (predominantly brick), and various lithic elements. After which these members learned how to complete context sheets. The other half of the crew were divided over several different new excavation areas also in section B including two additional potential post holes and one larger feature. The first of the additional holes excavated revealed a large, round, tabular stone likely used as a foundational element. This feature was photographed at several stages, and a context sheet was completed. The second hole was started, and potentially revealed an additional stratigraphic layer near the wall that runs north to south through the site. The rest of the crew spent their time preparing a new large excavation area. Once the area was cleaned, pre-excavation photos were taken and then excavation began. The initial stages of the excavation revealed artifacts including, several large pieces of faunal remains, several pottery sherds, and various lithic elements. |
