AREA 2000

Oggi è stata completata la pulizia dell’allargamento Ovest in previsione della chiusura che sarà effettuata venerdì e l’attenzione degli studenti si è spostata interamente sul Settore A dove si è proceduto alla messa in luce dei due scheletri in connessione individuati ieri.
Usk 2765, nella porzione centro orientale, è un individuo adulto riferente alla fase settecentesca del cimitero, in quanto intercettato a livello della tibia sinistra e del cranio da due fosse documentate quest’anno datate agli inizi dell’Ottocento. Durante la messa in luce è stata osservata, a livello dell’emitorace sinistro, una frattura di quattro coste avvenuta prima della morte, nonché un anomalo ingrossamento delle clavicole e ridotte dimensioni dell’omero sinistro.
Usk 2757 è collocato nel taglio sepolcrale posto nell’angolo Nord Occidentale del settore, subito a ridosso del limite di scavo; le relazioni stratigrafiche e il fatto che il taglio sia leggermente inclinato e allineato alle altre sepolture medievali, permettono di inserirlo nella medesima fase. Anche in questo caso si tratta di un individuo adulto, di sesso maschile, decomposto in spazio pieno. Al momento della messa in luce del cranio sono state individuate due pietre di fiume stranamente inserite nelle orbite, fatto che potrebbe essere interpretato come non casuale e avente valore simbolico; per poter validare questa ipotesi si dovrà aspettare la rimozione del cranio per osservare se queste si collocano in profondità o meno. 

Today the group began to try to wrap current projects up. Vicki, Jaidee and Max continued to work on 2757 and were able to expose the remains, get photographs and GIS points. They then began to remove and wrap the elements, but did not finish. Courtney and Morgan started to clean and excavate the far end of the west extension along wall of the church. At first there appeared to be a potential grave cut, but after further excavation nothing more was found. The entire west extension was then cleaned in preparation for closing of the site. In the morning, Kit finished removing skeleton 2754, including the cranium and upper thorax. Shelby and Eugenio continued to expose a skeleton in section A of area 2000. The soil of the grave consists of firm clay, chalk and charcoal.  After removing the skeleton, Kit joined Shelby and Eugenio in working to expose another cut in the reduction that has been open for the last week. Thus far, they have exposed the ribs, jaw, and one intact right leg, while discovering that the left leg below the mid-femur and the majority of the cranium had been destroyed.

AREA 3000

Nella porzione sud-occidentale del Settore B si è proceduto con il completamento della rimozione degli individui USK 3704, 3708 e 3731 orientati W-E e deposti rispettivamente all’interno delle fosse sepolcrali US -3689, - 3732 e – 3702, nello spazio compreso fra il perimetrale meridionale USM 5003 e la facciata USM 3380. Più a Nord , terminata la rimozione dei resti scheletrici dell’inumato USK 3740, è iniziata l’indagine all’interno della fossa sepolcrale US – 3744, orientata W-E a ridosso di USM 3380. Lungo la fossa di spoliazione della facciata della chiesa di XI secolo, nella porzione nord-orientale del settore, è iniziata la messa in luce dell’individuo adulto USK 3743, orientato N-S e deposto in decubito dorsale all’interno di US -3741; al di sopra del corpo si nota la presenza di numerose ossa sparse, soprattutto arti inferiori, collassate all’interno della tomba probabilmente in seguito alla decomposizione del coperchio della cassa lignea in cui era stato adagiato il defunto.  USK 3743, infatti, ad una prima analisi sembra essersi decomposto almeno parzialmente in spazio vuoto, come confermerebbe l’apertura a ventaglio del torace e la lassità delle articolazioni. La messa in evidenza completa dello scheletro chiarirà meglio questi processi tafonomici.

• Group 1:  Today we completed the process of removing our last (and first found!) burial from our section.  It was rewarding to bring our section to a close and to excavate and remove the juvenile in the best condition possible.  Many epiphyses were present in the burial--phalanges, tibia, femur and humerus.  We hope this assists future students in establishing a clear age for this individual.  With the help of our supervisor, we uncovered a new grave to the north of ours.  Thus far humerii, a skull and ribs were exposed.  We look forward to more work tomorrow.
• Group 2: Today we continued to uncover the skeletal elements in the new grave at the north east section of sector B. It is adjacent to the trench that was the original facade of the 11th century church. We were able to take points and the picture for the scattered skeletal elements and we fininshed removing them. We will continue to expose the original skeleton in the grave and begin removing it as soon as possible as we come to the end of our dig season.
• Group 3:  We completed removing the remainder human bones and one team member proceed to clean up the grave for final photographs.  In the process of cleaning the grave, other human bones were exposed.  Supervisor advised team to gently clean with trowel and human bones will remain untouched until next year.  

AREA 5000

Dopo aver rimosso US 5290, uno strato di colore giallo a matrice argillosa esteso sul settore B, si è proceduto con la consueta pulizia dell'intera area di scavo. Questa ci ha permesso di individuare due ulteriori tagli situayi uno a ovest e l'altro nella porzione sud del settore. Il primo si è rivelato essere un residuo di una buca già individuato la scorsa stagione mentre il secondo (US 3337) risulta molto più interessante. Si tratta infatti di un taglio circolare molto grande e profondo al cui interno era presente un riempimento a matrice sabbio argilloso di colore rossastro. Non sono stati individuati reperti all'interno ma risulta molto chiaro il rapporto di anteriorità rispetto alla struttura muraria USM 5117.

On this the 17th day of the field school, area 5000 was missing two members as they were in labs. The majority of the day was spent leveling the site. In addition, two holes were discovered. One was very small and completed, while the other was very large and excavation is ongoing. Neither excavation produced any artifacts.
