AREA 2000

Today most of us pick axed the central and western end of area 2000. We encountered several features, which are probably burials. After uncovering them, we did a heavy trowel cleaning of the area. While doing this, we found two more trenches (of N-S orientation). Afterwards, we began to pickaxe heavily from the center (at the wall at the eastern end) all the way back to the western end. Taylor and Analissa spent the day excavating the skeleton USK2813. After removing the right arm and torso, they spent the rest of the day slowly exposing the pelvis, which was firnly entrenched in the wall. Excavation of USK2813 will not be completed due to time constraints and the obstruction of the wall.

AREA 3000

Nella porzione nord-occidentale del settore è stata completata la messa in luce dell’individuo adulto USK 3829, orientato W-E e deposto in decubito dorsale all’interno della fossa sepolcrale US – 3805, a sud della facciata USM 3083. L’inumato si presenta complessivamente in cattivo stato di conservazione; il cranio, in apparizione laterale destra, è schiacciato verso il basso, l’arto superiore destro è disteso lungo il corpo, mentre quello sinistro è leggermente flesso sul coxale corrispondente; gli arti inferiori sono simmetrici, con le caviglie chiuse. Più ad est è iniziata l’indagine della tomba US – 3813, caratterizzata da un riempimento (US 3814) a matrice limo-argillosa di colore bruno e di consistenza friabile; la fossa sepolcrale è orientata S-N ed è a parallela alla fossa di spoliazione della facciata di XI secolo.

Today we continued excavation of the fill 3831 which has yielded no finds other than a few pieces of pottery and shells, most of which were found within the first twenty to thirty centimeters of fill. Though to fill continues downward, it is unlikely to contain anything past the level of the paralel trench to the north of it. We also continued to reveal the skeleton USK 3828 for removal and began cleaning and revealing the skeleton in the northeast corner of section b, though so far only the femurs and part of the cranium have been revealed. 

AREA 5000

Si è deciso di aprire un nuovo settore nella zona orientale dell'area di scavo. La nuova superficie si estende per 2,5 metri in direzione est e corre parallela alle stutture annesse alla chiesa abbaziale. Questa intende esplorare il corridoio settentrionale del chiostro in cui è possibile supporre la presenza di sepolture medievali piuttosto interessanti. Concentrandoci in quest'area è stato possibile rimuovere lo strato di asfalto superficiale con la relativa preparazione e un piano stradale più antico, costituito da un sedimento argilloso in cui si percepiscono frammenti lapidei e ceramici soprattutto del diciassettesimo secolo.

We excavated a new layer of soil on the newly opened eastern section. It seemed to have an even distribution of rocks and bricks, along with several sherds of pottery and a few small bone fragments. We also found another rosary bead.
