AREA 2000

Today in 2000 the excavation of the two burials (2843 and 2835) continued; the extremeties and cranium were further exposed and a headstone was uncovered above the cranium. The cranium, ribs, humerus, tibula, fibula and femurs of 2835 were further excavated. Another context was determined (2846) and was cleaned and photographed. 

AREA 3000

Nella porzione nord-orientale del Settore B è stata completata la messa in luce dell’individuo USK 3828, orientato S-N e deposto supino all’interno della fossa sepolcrale US – 3813. Dell’inumato, probabilmente un maschio adulto, si conservano solamente il cranio, in apparizione laterale sinistra, alcune vertebre, la clavicola sinistra, i coxali, alcune dita delle mani ed i femori, eccetto la porzione distale che è stata intercettata dalla canaletta moderna US – 3257. La parte centrale del corpo è stata tagliata da un’altra fossa sepolcrale (US – 3815), ad essa perpendicolare e quindi orientata W-E. Nella porzione sud-orientale del settore continua la messa in luce dell’individuo USK 3855, orientato W-E e deposto in decubito dorsale in US – 3832. Più ad ovest, a ridosso della facciata USM 3380, è iniziata l’indagine della tomba US – 3795, il cui margine settentrionale sembra essere delimitato da alcune pietre di colore bianco.

Fill 3797 in the south section of sector B was leveled to reveal femur and a small shard of glass deemed to be ancient. Skeleton 3800’s grave cut was cleaned to the sterile soil and had photos taken of it. There were three lectures: first Gino Fornaciari presenting “A Medieval Cold Case:The Death of Cangrande Della Scala Lord of Verona”, the second a GIS lecture by Francesco Coschino and Taylor Zaneri  and third presented by Alessandro Cariboni on photogrammetry. Continued exposing cut 3855, scattered bones were found and are assumed not to be associated with the burial; the main hypothesis is that there was a wooden coffin and when the body decomposed the body fell on SKU 83855. A small piece of glass was found in fill 3853. Continued excavating skeleton 3828. The lower limbs, upper limbs and sacrum  of skeleton 3828 were removed and tomorrow remainder will be removed.

AREA 5000

Nella giornata di oggi è continuato lo scavo del settore D e in particolare la rimozione di US 5433, uno strato composto da materiale da costruzione scartato durante le successive fasi di spolozaione dell'intero complesso monastico. Si è proceduto poi con lo scavo di US 5440, uno strato composto prevalentemente da lastre di ardesia frantumate e disposte a formare una sorta di pavimentazione dalla pendenza regolare. Nei prossimi giorni, dopo la rimozione totale di questo strato sarà possibile finalmente intaccare livelli medievali relativi a quest'area e indagare con più precisione le dinamiche intercorse in questo livello.

We continued excavating the same area as friday, and broke through the sequent layer using pickaxes. Along with finding many sherds of pottery that sent us to the 11 century, we also found large amounts of nails and animal bones. Some of these bones belonged to rats and pigs and concsisted of their long bones or their teeth. Tomorrow we hope to peel back yet another layer of area D as our last week on site continues on.
