Area 2000

La giornata ha visto gli studenti impegnati nella messa in luce, documentazione e, in alcuni casi, la rimozione degli individui parzialmente esposti nei giorni scorsi.
All’interno del taglio US -2701 è stato completato lo scavo dell’ultimo individuo sepolto Usk 2702, deposto supino e di cui sono visibili i femori, le tibie e l’avambraccio destro. E’ stato così possibile terminare la messa in luce del secondo individuo Usk 2719 di cui si conservano solo i femori, le tibie e parzialmente il bacino in quanto intercettato dal primo taglio sepolcrale.
Nella porzione centro meridionale continua lo scavo della fossa sepolcrale US -2708: all’interno è stata portata a termine la documentazione e la rimozione della riduzione non strutturata collocata al di sopra dell’individuo Usk 2730 subito sottostante. La riduzione si concentra soprattutto nella metà più orientale e vede almeno due individui adulti ridotti.
Nel Settore A si è conclusa la documentazione totale della sepoltura medievale US-2713 utilizzata per seppellire Usk 2714, un individuo adulto di sesso maschile, deposto supino e in buono stato di conservazione. E’ ipotizzabile pensare che al momento della morte indossasse un sudario in quanto è stata osservata una forte compressione delle spalle, con conseguente verticalizzazione delle clavicole, e del bacino. La decomposizione è avvenuta in spazio pieno, gli arti superiori sono flessi con le mani poste sulla testa del femore, mentre gli arti inferiori sono distesi paralleli e molto ravvicinati a causa della presenza del sudario. 

Today, Mark and Max finished excavating the first two burials and began to excavate the third burial in their trench, located in the northwest corner of the West Extension. Lydia and Jaidee continued to level the south central side burial in the West extension and then began to remove the bones, but are still working on removing the scattered elements. Courtney and Morgan finished exposing the bones at the north west area of the original section A. Courtney later moved on to removing the bones, beginning with the cranium, and will continue this process tomorrow. Kit finished cleaning the new area and began to excavate a new possible grave, though no human skeletal remains have been unearthed at this time.

Area 3000

La seconda settimana di scavo si apre con l’indagine di quattro fosse sepolcrali, tutte orientate W-E, sia nella porzione settentrionale che meridionale del Settore B. A Nord è stata completata la messa in luce di un individuo adulto (USK 3700), dal sesso non determinabile, deposto in decubito dorsale all’interno di US – 3625; lo scheletro si presenta in cattivo stato di conservazione e risulta essere stato intercettato da tre sepolture di epoca successiva, che hanno determinato l’asportazione del cranio, di parte del lato sinistro, del bacino , delle tibie e dei piedi. Nella porzione centro-meridionale continua la messa in luce dell’inumato USK 3701, deposto supino in US – 3698, mentre più ad Ovest la rimozione del riempimento US 3697 ha messo in evidenza i resti scheletrici di un individuo subadulto (USK 3705)apparentemente in buono stato di conservazione, eccetto per il fatto che la metà superiore del corpo risulta essere tagliata in senso S-N dalla canaletta moderna US – 3320. Lungo il perimetrale meridionale USM 5003, in particolare nell’angolo occidentale, è in corso lo scavo di alcune tombe infantili che sembrano intercettarsi vicendevolmente, creando una situazione stratigrafica piuttosto complessa, che sarà approfondita ulteriormente nei prossimi giorni.

• Group 1:  We started the day by cleaning the primary burial, taking pictures, and getting coordinate points.  Then we began to take down the western part of the unit to try to understand the relationship between the many bones present but unassociated with the primary burial.  We uncovered a second right femur and pelvis and a third right femur.  At this point it appears we have the burials of at least three individuals.  A significant piece of pottery was recovered from the south wall.  The patterns indicate a dating period of around 11th century.  
• Group 2: We finished cleaning the excess dirt off the two exposed femurs, left phalangies, and thorax. After which we began to remove the  skeletal elements from the ground, starting with the femur and worked our way up to the thorax. The thorax was extremely fragile, but should be fully removed by tomorrow morning.
• Group 3: Today we continued to expose skeleton 3701. We uncovered the thorax, pelvis, phalanges, and the rest of the long bones. Tomorrow we will continue to excavate and expose the skeleton for photos and GIS points. 
• Group 4: Students were directed by Supervisor to excavate beyond the water trench that cut the upper part of the grave.  In order to see if there were human remains consistent with the rest of the burial, but the Sudents uncovered another portion of the wall.  It was assumed that the upper portion of the grave was completely obliterated by the water trench.  Originally, the upper limit of the grave was aligned with the foundation of the wall.  Before exposing the human remains that were still connected, scattered bones that were atop the existing human remains were removed.  After this was accomplished, the human remains were gradually and carefully exposed.  
• Group 5: We dug the pit along the eastern wall of the facade and revealed a left femur that we think was intentionally used to fill the pit. The pit was also filled with rocks and yellow-brown sediment. It could have held a pillar at one point, and was later filled in with extra fill that was pulled from the surrounding area. 

Area 5000

Nella giornata di oggi è stato completato lo scavo dei tagli esposti la scorsa settimana. Degno di nota è la quantità di ossa animali provenienti dal riempimento US 5280: una buca irregolare situata nella porzione più a nord dell'area. Questa US sembra intercettare altri due tagli, circolari e dal diametro di circa 30-40 cm. Il loro riempimento (UUSS 5283; 5284) presentava elemeni ltici, tra cui frammenti di lastre di ardesia, assenti nelle altre buche indagate in questo livello. Nei prossimi giorni procederemo con un azione eplorativa in orizzontale utile ad individuare ulteriori elementi in grado di fornirci informazioni su questa area così complessa.

On this the sixth day of the field school, Three members of the crew were missing for excavations due to being in labs. The first was in the osteology lab, the second was in the GIS lab, and the third participated in the excavation durring the first portion of the day, but was moved to the material culture lab due to an alergic reaction on the site. Three areas were excavated, the first was a hole that was begun during the last season, this excavation produced some faunal remains and brick fragments. The second was the large feature in the north east quadrant of section B that has been excavated the past few days. What originaly appeared to be a large single hole was ultimately discovered to be cut by two other holes. These holes produced faulnal remains, pottery sherds and lithic elements. The third was a modern structure found in the south wall of section C. This structure was comprised of brick and plaster and cleaning the profile produced a metal key, a variety of pottery sherds with diffeerent glazes and paste types, and glass shards of various colors. All these artifacts date from the late 18th to 19th century.

Area 6000

La rimozione di US 6001 ha permesso di mettere in luce i primi contesti cimiteriali dell'area, anche se questi (come quelli presenti in US 6001) hanno subito gli effetti della realizzazione del parcheggio di epoca contemporanea. Le prime sepolture individuate (USk 6102 ed USk 6105) risultano infatti compresse orizzontalmente e forzatamente disconnesse oltre che essere state tagliate orizzontalmente risultando così molto male conservate. Dopo la messa in luce e definizione di questi contesti si provvederà a stabilire una strutturalità delle'eventuale cimitero individuato.

To begin the day, we trowel cleaned Section A of our area. We focused on two main burials, each of which contained multiple individuals. So far, we are unsure if they are intact burials or reductions, due to the fact that they have both been disturbed by modern construction and the clearing of level 6001. We have been exposing the bones and the surrounding area to determine the contexts, try to find a definitive cut, and prepare the areas for photographs. We have been using finer tools than before, such as small brushes and dental picks for this detailed work.
