Generale

Oggi ci ha raggiunto sullo scavo una equipe di geofisici del Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra dell'Università di Pisa. Il professor Giorgio Zanchetta e la dottoressa Monica Bini hanno effettuato un carotaggio stratigrafico nel punto in cui un tempo si estendeva il Lago di Sesto, ed analizzato la carota di sedimenti assieme agli studenti della Fieldschool. 

Area 2000

Nella giornata di oggi è stata terminata la rimozione delle ossa in riduzione nel taglio US -2733 che conta un minimo di cinque individui ridotti, tutti adulti; interessante è stato il ritrovamento di una vertebra lombare che presentava una evidente artrosi nonché un foro sulla spina. Al di sotto è stato messo in luce il piano di lastrine che sembra essere stato collocato in modo non casuale solo nella metà più orientale. Domani sarà possibile stabilire se è presente o meno una sepoltura in deposizione primaria nel livello sottostante.
E’ stato documentato e rimosso anche Usk 2748 ed effettuata una pulizia della porzione centrale dell’allargamento Ovest dove emergono alcuni tagli la cui indagine proseguirà nei prossimi gironi. Per quanto riguarda il Settore A è iniziata la messa in luce di due scheletri in deposizione primaria:
Usk 2751 all’interno del taglio US -2750 nell’angolo Sud Orientale, orientato Ovest Est e in pessimo stato di conservazione; da un punto di vista stratigrafico, dal tipo di conservazione e dalla modalità di seppellimento potrebbe far riferimento alla fase medievale.
Usk 2754 all’interno del taglio US -2753, è stato deposto con testa ad Ovest all’interno della vasca laterizia USM 2100 nella porzione Nord Orientale. 

Today in Area 2000 we made a lot of progress. Lydia finished exposing skeleton 2748, and began to remove the bones. Skeleton 2748 remains incomplete as a skeleton due to its position as it is cut by other graves in the West Extension. Morgan helped Lydia for some time, but also worked on the reduction in Sector A. She and Eugenio removed all of the bones exposed in the layer, and there appear to be more bones underneath the layer of slate and rocks. Tomorrow, they will continue to clean and remove the next layer of fill to expose the possible new skeletal remains. Mark and Jaidee finished excavating skeleton 2743, also an incomplete skeleton in the morning, and Kit and Vicki removed skeleton 2745. In the afternoon, Vicki and Jaidee cleaned the beginning of the West extension to search for more grave cuts, while Mark and Kit began a new grave in the northeast area of Sector A, which appears to be modern and continues under a previously excavated wall. Max and Shelby continued to excavate their grave cut in the southern portion of sector A, and will likely remove the bones tomorrow.

Area 3000

Nella porzione centro settentrionale del Settore B si è proceduto con la rimozione degli individui adulti USK 3709 e USK 3716, entrambi orientati W-E e deposti in decubito dorsale rispettivamente in US – 3706 e US – 3714. In particolare la fossa sepolcrale US -3706, più ad Ovest, è stata intercettata dalla fornace per la fusione e la gettata della campana e taglia a sua volta parte della tomba US – 3714, asportata a Nord da un’altra fossa sepolcrale di epoca successiva. Nella porzione centro-meridionale del settore continua la messa in luce dell’inumato USK 3730, orientato W-E e deposto supino all’interno di un taglio ellittico piuttosto profondo. Lo scheletro appare in buono stato di conservazione, eccetto forse per il cranio che sembra aver subito uno schiacciamento verso il basso. Più ad Ovest, vicino alla facciata USM 3380, è in corso lo scavo di un’altra fossa sepolcrale, US – 3726, che sembra contenere i resti di un individuo in connessione anatomica. Nell’angolo sud-occidentale, nello spazio compreso fra la facciata USM 3380 ed il perimetrale meridionale USM 5503, continua la messa in evidenza delle tre sepolture (USK 3704, 3708 e 3731) che si intercettano vicendevolmente e sembrano essere tagliate a loro volta sia da USM 5003, a Sud, sia da USM 3380 ad Ovest. Se così fosse, tali inumati risulterebbero essere anteriori all’ampliamento dell’abbazia e quindi all’edificio di XII secolo, così come l’individuo USK 3722, la cui porzione superiore del corpo era stata tagliata dalla facciata USM 3335.

Group 1: Since the limits of the burial that I exposed yesterday were not clear, I expanded the excavation towards the west. By doing so, I managed to empty the water pipe trench to in order to expose another portion of the fill of the burial, to see if it expanded also under it. The skeleton in it has now the pelvis and a portion of the lower limbs exposed.

Group 4: Today we finished excavating both sets of remains near the bell oven. Tomorrow we will begin excavating in a new section that is a possible grave based on the surrounding elements.

Group 5: Today we continued to reveal and clean the skeleton on the southern portion of sector B along the trench. Our skeleton is almost complete; he is missing his left fibula. We think he was buried in a coffin because of the excellent preservation and the spacing between the joints that indicates empty space. We took points with the total station today but will take our pictures tomorrow; the rain prevented pictures today.

Group 2: Further excavation to the West revealed that the adult skeleton had been intersected by the 12th Century trench and all upper elements and skull was missing. Further detailed excavation was needed around the joints, in order to attempt ageing of the juvenille skeletons. Points were taken by the total station. Removal of bones begin tomorrow.

Area 5000

E' stato completato lo scavo delle fosse UUSS 5324 e 5325 le quali hanno restituito materiale ceramico e fauna. US 5324 in particolare conservava al suo interno due frammenti di maiolica arcaica, il che ci ha fatto presumere che l'intera US si tratti in realtà di un residuo di un riempimento già individuato la scorsa stagione di scavo e che era stato nominato US 5221. Sono state svuotate poi altre due buche: US 5326 e US 5327 posizionate lungo il perimetrale Sud della chiesa abbaziale e che con ogni probabilità possono essere riferite a due buche di palo. Continua inoltre la messa in luce dello scheletro individuato nella porzione est del settore B riguardo al quale possiamo solo dire che la pessima conservazione delle ossa ci permetterà di ottenere solo informazioni circa la posizione e l'orientamento dell'individuo inumato.

On this the 13th day of the field school two members of area 5000 were missing due to labs. The remaining members continued the excavation of the site. The two trenches located in the north eastern portion of sector B were completed. The two excavations produced limited cultural materials. A hole, thought to be cut by the northern most trench, was determined to be an extension of the initial trench. This extension produced two additional ceramic sherds that matched the style of the piece of blue glazed pottery found yesterday. There were several ceramic sherds found in one of the three additional holes, but the others were sterile. The skeleton excavation continued, and it revealed two long bones of the lower limbs, currently thought to be femurs.

Area 6000

Nell'angolo Nord-Ovest del settore B è iniziata la messa in luce dell'individuo USk 6119 per mezzo della rimozione del riempimento US 6118. Sulla fascia centrale la stessa operazione di scavo (di US 6120) sta portando alla luce i resti dell'individuo USk 6122, sepoltura orientata Ovest-Est. La tomba a cassa litica USM 6123 appare parzialmente demolita, nella sua metà Orientale, per la realizzazione di numerose sepolture in fossa semplice e, a Sud della struttura, numerose fosse intercettanti l'un l'altra stanno venendo esposte.

Today, we worked within the burials identified yesterday to expose the bones in order to determine whether or not they are articulated skeletons or not. One of the skeletons in area 6112 could potentially be a sub-adult, given its smaller stature. The other burial in 6112 had its fill removed and could have contrasted its cut within another burial. Working the in East portion of 6111, there are many disarticulated bones and a line of long bones and stones that may indicate a reduction. The Northern portion of 6111, the lithic burial, has been cut by other burials and contains at least five skulls. Additionally, a group of geo-archaeologists from the University of Pisa came and took cores from the old lake. They are attempting to determine the extent of the lake and how it changed over time.
