Area 1000

Continua la pulizia dell'area 1000 che mira a individuare una superficie utile ai fini dell'indagine archeologica dopo l'intervento del mezzo meccanico. Nella porzione orientale dell'area di scavo inoltre è stato possibile individuare uno strato caratterizzato da una concentrazione piuttosto alta di materiale edilizio quale pietre scistose e laterizi frammentati (US 1172). E' possibile ipotizzare che l'US in questione sia relativa a un residuo di un piano di vita di età contemporanea localizzato in questa zona. Tale ipotesi sarebbe inoltre convalidata dalla tamponatura di una porta posta direttamente sopra lo strato avvenuta nello stesso periodo.   

Today we began our work by cleaning the remainder of the site with trowels (our tool of choice) in hopes of finding evidence for possible graves on the west of our site, close to Area 2000.  After surveying the newest addition to our area, our site manager Alan decided we should go a layer deeper... which meant more pickaxing.  We went about 5cm deeper than the surface layer, and then went over our work again with trowels.  We noticed a few new trenches and extensions of those from the original area of our site.  Today was a fairly slow day - it was mostly preparation work for our future archaeological endeavors.  We also had a discussion after lunch on a few interesting and possibly controversial issues related to the idea of Bioarchaeology that had been brought up by some articles we all read prior to the discussion.  

Area 2000

In giornata è stato completamente documentato e rimosso l’individuo USk 2297. Sempre nel Settore B è iniziata l’indagine del taglio sepolcrale US – 2284 posto subito a est di US -2282 nella porzione centro settentrionale e a questo parallelo. Anche in questo caso è stato messo in luce uno strato di calce (US 2298) che copre parzialmente l’individuo USk 2299 orientato, contrariamente all’altro, con la testa a Nord e con gli arti inferiori asimmetrici. Nel Settore A è terminatal’indagine dell’ossario US 2293 all’interno del quale, oltre ovviamente ai resti ossei posti in giacitura secondaria, è stato rinvenuto un rosario con grani lignei uniti da una catena in rame; al di sotto compare il proseguimento della struttura laterizia USM 2100 già rilevata gli anni scorsi.

Today, in the northeastern corner of Unit 2000, we continued to cut down the 2011 layer, and even started to reveal a new soil layer underneath.  Along the way, we found many fragments of a variety of bones, and removed them and bagged them to be catalogued later.  We also identified a number of large rocks that appear to be connected in a possible pattern like that of some sort of wall.

We also continued working on the ossuary, and brought down the fill, all the while continuing to remove the numerous skeletal elements we found along the way, including skull fragments, teeth and long bones, to name a few.  During the removal of the ossuary fill, we found a number of miscellaneous objects including nails, glass, and even rosary beads.  This process was documented and photographed.

Further into Unit 2000, we finished removing the rest of skeleton 2297, as well as the rest of the lime layer, taking pictures all the while.  Once we did that, we began cleaning out the area between this trench and the adjacent one (which will be discussed later) to find the limit for each cut or to see if they are in some way connected.

Regarding the adjacent trench, we continued to follow the cut and follow or remove the lime there, labeled as feature 2298.  As we did so, we found 2 femora, a nail, some anklebones and the beginning of a skull.  The skull was found in the northern face of the cut, and the legs were in a non-traditional burial position, with the right leg raised and bent.

Area 3000

Nella giornata di oggi si è proceduto con l’indagine del taglio US – 3220 ed in particolare con la messa in luce della sezione est, che presenta segni di arrossamento, dovuto all’azione prolungata di un fuoco. La rimozione del riempimento US 3230 ha inoltre evidenziato un livello caratterizzato da numerose tracce di carbone, scorie metalliche e frammenti di laterizi vetrificati a causa dell’esposizione a temperature elevate. È stata completata la messa in luce dell’individuo  Us 3244, orientato W-E nella porzione centro-meridionale del Settore A, immediatamente a nord del muro USM 3073. Lo scheletro, mal preservato, è deposto in decubito dorsale, con il cranio in norma laterale sinistra, l’arto superiore destro è disteso lungo il corpo, anche se l’omero è assente , poiché tagliato in corrispondenza del muro USM 3073. Parte della porzione superiore sinistra, del coxale e del femore è intercettata ed asportata dalla trincea di epoca moderna US – 3223. Vicino al femore destro è stato inoltre rinvenuto un ribattino in ferro che potrebbe indicare la presenza originaria di una cassa lignea, non più visibile, che avrebbe determinato parte della decomposizione in spazio vuoto, come indicherebbe la dislocazione della mandibola, di alcune vertebre e la rotazione verso l’interno dell’arto inferiore destro. Nel Settore B continua lo scavo dell’individuo Us 3248, deposto supino ed orientato N-S, immediatamente a sud del muro medievale. Lo scheletro risulta tagliato sia all’altezza del collo, sia al di sotto del torace; sono inoltre assenti entrambi gli arti superiori. Nella giornata di domani si procederà con la documentazione e la rimozione di entrambe le sepolture.

Sector A:
In rectangular hole in the west central portion of site A, we are bringing down the bottom of the pit on the western side, to see if there is a wall but it turn out to be bricks with nothing else attached and slate. Two tibia were found and are still in the process of uncovering.
Sector B:
In the morning a skeletal inventory sheet was filled out for the skeleton labeled US 3244 and then we started to remove skeleton from the ground. Once removed the skeletal remains were wrapped in tissue and labeled  with tape and placed them in the bag. At the end of the afternoon the skeleton was completely removed;
The skeletal remains labeled US 3248 were cleaned up and photographed. The GIS points were taken. In the afternoon the process of removal began, all the right ribs were removed, and both clavicles, after removal they were wrapped in tissue and labeled.
In the rest of Sector B we leveled the ground, cleaned up with the trout and picked through the southwest side of the sector to level it with the southeast side of it.

Area 4000

Settore A

Continua l’approfondimento del settore 4800, in cui non si intravedono cambiamenti alcuni di unità stratigrafica al di sotto dell’attuale banco argilloso (all’interno del quale continuano ad essere rinvenuti frammenti ossei misti a residui ceramici). L’ipotesi attuale verte in direzione della genesi naturale di questo deposito, risultato di dilavamenti da quote superiori con relativo trascinamento di materiali, tanto ossei quanto ceramici.

Settore C

Prosegue l’opera del mezzo meccanico relativa all’ampliamento dell’area di scavo; il team è stato impegnato, nella giornata di oggi, a seguire il movimento terra per mezzo di pala e piccone.

Today ground was backhoed in order to expose the new section C. We then pick-axed and shoveled the exposed area. In doing so we found pottery and a nail. In the north-east test area of section A we cleaned and exposed new bones. We started to clean the bones for later removal.
