Area 1000

Nella giornata di oggi si è continuato con lo scavo della trincea US 1209 e con la pulizia della porzione centrale del settore B. Questa sarà necessaria per individuare eventuali fasi precedenti alla creazione delle trincee. Nella porzione ovest dell'area invece sono state scavate alre due buche circolari, dal diametro di circa 20 cm, forse relative a fasi di ricostruzione o restauro della chiesa. Questa è una tesi che dovrà essere dimostrata dalla messa in pianta delle numerose buche presenti nell'area, caratterizzate da forme e riempimenti spesso collegabili tra loro. Continua infine lo scavo della sepoltura US 1206, nel settore C dell'area 1000.

Today we once again split up into our five separate groups. Kailey Annabel and Dave returned to their test pit and extended the burial that they had found in hopes of finding the distal leg bones. Although they did find a cut and fill, they were unable to find more bones, so it may have disintegrated. They hope to finish this project by tomorrow.

Sophie and Alan continued working in the west section of the A1000 that neighbors A2000. They dug up two more fills, and found an animal bone in one, and mostly rocks and iron in the other. They hope to clean and photograph the area soon to better understand what exactly the purpose of these features were. Additionally, they began cleaning the wall and leveling the area to once again photograph and identify more fills or cuts that may be present on the lower stratigraphy.

Caitlin worked on the northern wall, cleaning it (where they'd gone down two layers a day before). She also cleaned the side of the vertical trench. 

Steve and Stephanie spent the whole day pick axing and trying to level out their area in hopes of finding new features, cuts or dark marks, any finds. Their job is not yet done, so that's what they'll work on tomorrow.

Diana and Megan found the bottom of their trench and created side walls of it- the cut and where it intersects with the stone wall, on the east side. They also found a hole in the trench that predates the trench and they cleaned that. They found sherds, nails and mouse bones.

Area 2000

Terminata la messa in luce di USk 2339 nel Settore B avvenuta su più livelli per permettere la documentazione di tutti i distretti anatomici, data la presenza di spazi dovuti alla decomposizione in spazio vuoto che avrebbero compromesso la  corretta preservazione delle connessioni. Si tratta di un individuo di sesso femminile di circa 50/60 anni, deposto sul fianco destro e avente, in origine, una veste funeraria di cui, come già accennato, rimane una traccia parziale sulla calce. Nel Settore A  è stato completamente evidenziato e rimosso USk 2342: dello scheletro, orientato S/N, rimangono conservate entrambe le tibie e le fibule in connessione con i piedi. Il rispettivo taglio intercetta la struttura laterizia e lo strato US 2213 che la riempiva e che è stato interamente rimosso. L’indagine del taglio sepolcrale US – 2330 procede nella porzione centrale: dell’individuo scheletrizzato (USk 2340) identificato all’interno sono visibili il cranio in norma frontale, le coste, gli arti superiori leggermente flessi sul bacino e, ancora parzialmente, gli art inferiori distesi e paralleli. Nella porzione centro occidentale la pulizia ha permesso di determinare la presenza di almeno altri tre tagli che saranno indagati a partire dalla giornata di domani.

Area 3000

Continua la pulizia dell’ampliamento Sud-occidentale dell’area che ha permesso di individuare la continuazione del perimetrale Nord del muro medievale USM 3073 e parte dell’antica facciata dell’abbazia, che prosegue verso Sud congiungendosi con il perimetrale meridionale. Durante la pulizia è stata inoltre individuata la presenza di alcuni elementi litici di media-grande pezzatura allineati fra loro , che sembrano costituire due strutture litiche di forma allungata, rettangolare. Si tratta probabilmente di due tombe a cassa, di cui una orientate W-E nella porzione S-W del Settore A, mentre l’altra, orientata N-S sembra essere situata immediatamente di fronte all’antica facciata. Nei giorni seguenti si procederà con l’approfondimento e la messa in evidenza di questi nuovi contesti. Nel Settore A è stata completata la messa in luce dell’individuo Us 3275, orientato W-E e deposto supino all’interno di US – 3238, nella porzione centro-settentrionale del settore. Lo scheletro si presenta in cattivo stato di conservazione e risulta inoltre intercettato e tagliato all’altezza delle epifisi dei femori, probabilmente dalla trincea moderna US – 3257. Il cranio, in apparizione frontale, è schiacciato, così come il torace, di cui rimangono solamente alcune coste, anch’esse pressate verso il basso. È assente anche l’omero destro, mentre l’avambraccio corrispondente è leggermente flesso sul pube; l’arto superiore sinistro è steso lungo il corpo. Nel Settore B continua lo scavo della trincea US – 3257, realizzata in epoca moderna probabilmente per drenare e allontanare l’acqua dalla chiesa.

In sector A, skeleton 3290 continued to be uncovered. The skull was exposed and cleaned. Both clavicles and scapulae were discovered, the left humerus is missing, the right appears to be cut out and the right hand has fallen into the pelvic region. The vertebrae impression is clear but unable to be excavated. A nail was discovered to the right of the skull with the point making contact with the parietal region. This may indicate that this particular burial was initially placed in a coffin. The skeleton is expected to be fully cleaned and photographed tomorrow.

In sector B, burial 3275 had points taken on and around skeleton after it was completely cleaned. Photographs were taken. A slab of slate was then removed on the northern side which ran parallel with the skeleton. Finished exposing hands and the left radius and ulna which were located under the slab of slate. Filled out skeletal form and will remove skeletal remains tomorrow.
Trench 3258 continued to be exposed and cleaned, taken down to the rock level. A large nail was a uncovered. The width of the trench is still unknown and will continue to explore this tomorrow.
Skeleton 3233 continued to be uncovered and it appears as though the left side including the femora and os coxae were cut, possibly by a previous burial. Tomorrow the remainder of the skeleton will be exposed and then photographed and documented before removal.
Sector B of the extension was pick axed and three possible burials were exposed; one is close to the wall as previous burials have been. It is small in size and appears to be transversely cut. The other two, long bones have only been exposed and exploration will continue tomorrow.

Sector A extension was cleaned and levelled. Scattered long bones and fragments were uncovered but needed to be removed to continue levelling. There is a set of long bones that may belong to a possible burial which will be explored in depth later on.

On the wall 3073 in the extension very small remains were uncovered after pick axing, including ribs with a bead located on top of them. Further exploration will continue tomorrow.

Area 4000

Settore C
Una volta messe in luce le strutture rinvenute dell’angolo nord orientale dell’area (US 4129 ed US 4128) è iniziata la rimozione dello strato di lastre di ardesia che, parzialmente, le copre. In parallelo è stato rimosso il lacerto di un piano stradale di epoca contemporanea presente su US 4128. Queste pulizie hanno permesso di evidenziare l’effettiva forma della struttura US 4129 (sempre più ipotizzabile come basamento per un eventuale pilastro o colonnino) e di rendere ancora più chiaro come US 4131 (struttura relativa al chiostro medievale afferente all’abbazia, con andamento nord-sud) sia stato, nel suo alzato, inglobato dalla matrice maltosa e cementizia di US 4128. Questo fatto, pur rendendo ad ora invisibile l’elevato della struttura medievale, la dovrebbe comunque aver sigillata e mantenuta nei suoi primi filari. Successive indagini permetteranno di capire se, rimuovendo US 4128, potrà essere possibile liberare completamente l’alzato superstite di US 4131. Più a nord, nelle stesse condizioni, potrebbe risultare essere il cantonale (generato dall’unione di US 4123 ed US 4131) del perimetro medievale del chiostro. Analogamente a quanto accaduto ad US 4131, anche qui l’intervento umano di età moderna dovrebbe aver incluso suddetto alzato. Nell’angolo occidentale del settore si sta mettendo in luce l’angolo nord-ovest del cortile, quello formato dal contatto tra US 4123 ed US 4062.

Settore A
L’indagine nel Settore 4800 è proseguita con la rimozione di US 4804, US 4803 e parzialmente US 4805; tutti e tre riempimenti di tagli eseguiti nella base argillosa US 4802. Il primo ha restituito diversi frammenti ossei anche di grandi dimensioni, privi comunque di alcuna connessione ed in pessimo stato di conservazione. 

This morning we conducted a group presentation of our site for our fellow students, our instructors and for the visiting guest lecturer, Dr. Reitsema. As a group we finished cleaning the area of Sector C that was recently exposed by the back hoe. We defined the limits of each new context and then proceeded to clean, take pictures and total station measurements for each. We finished the morning by completing context sheets for the four new contexts: 4128, 4129, 4130, and 4131. In the afternoon we removed the top layer, 4128. We then evened the eastern external wall for greater visibility as several members of the team worked in northern corner of Sector C, to expose the underlying wall which runs through our site, east-to-west. Glass, nails, pottery shards and half of a coin were found while working on the eastern expansion of Sector C.  In Sector A, several team members worked on the three new cuts within the existing teat pit. The bottom of the two of the cuts were discovered, and human remains of a poor quality were found in the third.
