Area 1000

Nella giornata di oggi ci siamo concentrati sul completamento dell'escavazione delle trincee US 1146, US 1125, US 1174 e US 1135. Inoltre è stato dedicato molto tempo alla documentazione fotografica e stratigrafica dell'intera area.

Area 1000 began the day giving a presentation of our area to the other students. We explained the hypothesized layout, the progress we have made in a week (emphasizing the expansion project last week that doubled our area space), and our future plans for the excavation. After touring the other areas and learning about the site as a whole, we set back to work. The rest of the morning and the afternoon were designated to excavating the trenches. We found many pottery sherds  during our excavation.  Most  were found in a trench near the eastern border of our area (dating to around 16th-18th century) with possible medieval pottery having been found on the more western side. During the last hour of the day we discovered another possible wall.  We are excited to continue digging tomorrow to uncover more of the wall and more of the past.

Area 2000

Oggi l’attenzione è stata spostata interamente sul Settore A.In mattinata è stato completamente documentato e rimosso l’individuo USk 2299 già descritto nella giornata di ieri. L’indagine è proseguita all’interno dei due tagli sepolcrali posti allineati ad US-2284, verso la porzione più meridionale del settore: sia in US – 2220 che in US -2252 è emerso uno strato di calce (US 2303 e US 2259) che copre i rispettivi scheletri collocati all’interno e la cui conservazione delle ossa risulta ottima. Domani inizierà la messa in luce e la documentazione degli individui. Il fatto che in queste fosse sia stata ritrovata la calce, gettata sia alla base della fossa come sorta di letto sia, in modo non troppo omogeneo, al di sopra dei corpi fa pensare che siano coeve o comunque legate ad un unico evento epidemico.

Sector A:
We began cleaning the cranium in the middle of the northwestern section of sector A.

Sector B:
In US 2298 we continued to remove the lime. We also removed all of the skeletal remains (US 2299). The skeleton was in excellent condition. Some notable finds were the hyoid and internal bones of the skull. This included the lacrimal, ethmoid and vomer. Pictures were taken throughout the day as levels were removed. 
In US 2221 we finished removing the fill and exposed the lime layer (2303). Photos and GIS points were taken.  The skeletal remains (2340) was exposed and cleaned. Photos were taken at the end of the day. 
In US 2308 is located on the southern wall of sector B. General cleanup of the area was done and photos and GIS points were taken. The fill on the northwestern portion of the unit was brought down to match the rest of the unit that had been excavated in the previous season. The lime layer was exposed as well as human remains. We have exposed a portion of the right femur and patella.
We took aerial photos of all three unites in sector B.  

Area 3000

Durante la giornata di oggi si è proceduto con la messa in luce dell’individuo Us 3253, deposto supino all’interno della fossa sepolcrale US – 3251 ed orientato W-E, nella porzione sud-orientale del Settore A. Dello scheletro, mal preservato, si conservano solamente parte delle epifisi distali di entrambi i femori, le tibie, le fibule ed alcune ossa dei piedi. La porzione superiore del corpo è stata intercettata ed asportata probabilmente durante i lavori per l’ampliamento dell’area. Continua inoltre la rimozione del riempimento (US 3230) della fossa rettangolare US - 3220, caratterizzato da una grande concentrazione di carbone, laterizi concotti e numerose scorie di bronzo. Nel Settore B la rimozione di UUSS 3116, 3249 e 3250 ha messo in evidenza uno strato (US 3259) a matrice limosa, di colore bruno, apparentemente privo di ossa umane, che si estende in modo omogeneo nella porzione orientale del settore. Esso risulta intercettato a nord da una fossa di forma allungata, orientata NW-SE (US – 3257), mentre a sud da un taglio esteso lungo la sezione meridionale dell’area, il cui riempimento è caratterizzato da numerosi laterizi ed elementi litici di piccola e media pezzatura. La pulizia della porzione occidentale del settore ha inoltre permesso di individuare la presenza di alcune ossa in connessione, che saranno meglio indagate nei giorni seguenti.

Sector A
Skeleton burial continued to be cleaned and pedistoled. The rib cage, cervical vertebrea, and scapula were uncovered and started to be pedistoled. Legs of the skeleton appeared to be wrapped together possible in a showed. A nail was found to the right of the distal end of the right femur. It suspected the skeleton was in a wooden coffin. The head was surrounded by stones and the skull was badly crushed. This means that it was possibly buried with a box over the head meaning no dirt could take up this space and the skull was crushed due to decomposition. The full skeleton was cleaned and photographs were taken.
The rectangular hole in sector A was lowered and cleaned for photographs. There was a thick layer of charcoal and scattered bricks. Pottery sherds were scattered throughout the hole. A large rock in the south western corner of the hole was found and thought to possibly be a wall.

Sector B
The group in this sector pick axed layers away looking for possible burials due to scattered bones in the area.
In section 3248 12 vertebra were identified and 8 ribs from rib 1, scapula were uncovered. There were no humeri. There was a transverse cut through the midsection of the skeleton. 

Area 4000

Settore A

Prosegue la rimozione di US 4892, strato in cui persiste il ritrovamento di frammenti ossei di medie e grandi dimensioni. Raggiunto il secondo livello di avanzamento, nella giornata di oggi sono state messe in luce delle ossa lunghe di natura umana, prive di connessione ed in pessimo stato di conservazione. L’ipotesi di un dilavamento naturale che abbia al suo interno elementi di natura cimiteriale di cronologia anteriore all’impianto monasteriale è sempre più forte.

Settori B e C

Dopo la ripulitura generale dell’area successiva all’allargamento tramite mezzo meccanico, sono state messe in evidenza diverse istanze archeologiche, fra cui US 4116 (strato argilloso di colore marrone chiaro, individuato nella porzione occidentale dell’area e di probabile origine naturale), US 4117 (presente lungo il limite settentrionale delle aree, caratterizzato dalla forte presenza di laterizi e pietre nella matrice argillo-limosa), US 4118 (data la quota molto alta ed i contesti rimossi sopra di esso, sembrerebbe trattarsi di una situazione di riadattamento del piano di calpestìo di epoca moderna), US 4120 (una lente di malta al centro dei settori, di forma sub circolare che potrebbe essere relazionata alle operazioni di riadattamento cui fa capo US 4118). Dopo la dovuta documentazione di tutte le istanze stratigrafiche messe in luce con le operazioni di questi giorni, il primo strato che verrà rimosso nei prossimi giorni sarà US 4117 (nella cui zona, a quote ben più profonde, l’analisi del georadar evidenzia delle anomalie nel deposito la cui indagine avverrà nei prossimi giorni).

Today we troweled the surface of section C in order to reveal new contexts and extend the old ones. In the process of doing so we found 15th century pottery, animal bones, and nails. We then cleaned the edges of the north wall before cleaning the surface of sections B and C in order to prepare for photographs. After photographing the sections we named the newly revealed contexts. Using the total station, we measured points so we could later create a digital map of the site. This was also done to measure the depths at various points in the site. We worked on defining limits in section C before removing the layers. In the test area of section A we found more human bone and a lower level of the medieval wall.
