Area 1000

Oggi è stato completato lo scavo della buca US-1176, nel riempimento della quale è stata rinvenuta buona parte di una grande olla medievale. Lo strato tagliato dalla stessa buca, posizionato al centro del settore B, invece aveva al suo interno un frammento di un'olla, probabilmente altomedievale, caratterizzata da una decorazione incisa ad onde parallele. Questi elementi suggeriscono la presenza di livelli antecedenti alle fasi finora individuate che nei prossimi giorni sarà necessario indagare per mettere in luce eventuali evidenze stratigrafiche più antiche. E' stato inoltre aperto un nuovo settore nell'angolo sud-occidentale del settore A, denominato settore C. Si tratta di un piccolo saggio di 2m X 2m, effettuato per esplorare in profondità l'andamento stratigrafico di questa zona dell'area di scavo, caratterizzata dall'incontro tra la fondazione del transetto e la fondazione della struttura muraria US 1008. Gli strati più superficiali hanno già permesso di individuare due buche tagliate quasi per intero dalle fondazioni del transetto.  

Today was a very busy day in Area 1000. In the morning portion of the excavation, we were divided up into groups, some working on test pits in the Southern-most section of the Area, while others worked in the Northeastern-most quadrant, and still some continued work on a deep pit containing large amounts of pottery located in the center of our Area. There were various aims for doing the test pits, and each one is listed respectively: with the test pits, we were searching to find if there were any more important materials to find that would suggest that there was more in the Area that we had yet to come across (and inadvertently, we found the lining to the original foundation of the Badia).  For the Northeastern quadrant, we hoped to better see anything that may have been buried beneath the clay in this zone, soon revealing yet another trench, the exact dating, of which, we are unsure for the time being. In the pottery pit, we hoped to successfully extract any and all remaining pottery that was still buried within it. We worked on these three zones for the entirety of the morning.

            We started the afternoon with photographs of our respective sections, excavating the new trench, take elevation points at various locations around the site, XXX, and clean up the remaining areas by using a pickaxe and shovel to level out the uneven layers of clay on the western sections of the Area. In the process of pursuing the latter, we actually stumbled upon a piece of pottery that was dated to the Early Medieval time period (roughly believed to have been from the 8^th century), a significant find, and the oldest piece of pottery found at Badia Pozzeveri to date! We hope to continue with these aforementioned processes into tomorrow, and are looking forward to moving to the next stage of our Area’s excavation.

Area 2000

Continua nel Settore A l’indagine nella porzione più settentrionale. L’accurata pulizia all’interno della struttura laterizia ha permesso di evidenziare l’esistenza di un taglio allungato (US -2311) orientato W/E che la intercetta parzialmente ad est, il cui riempimento (US2309) è caratterizzato dalla presenza di numerosa ossa non in connessione anatomica. Presso la porzione sud occidentale è stato messo in luce, documentato e rimosso uno scheletro in connessione anatomica (USk 2315), orientato E/W, di cui rimangono visibili solo gli arti inferiori pessimamente conservati; uno dei tagli sepolcrali evidenziati lo scorso anno lo hanno parzialmente tagliato a livello del bacino. Inoltre, è iniziata l’indagine del taglio US -2272 nel Settore B: questo è collocato a ridosso del muro USM 2106, è orientato S/N e appare parallelo alle fosse sepolcrali documentate gli scorsi giorni. Durante la rimozione di parte del riempimento (US 2273) è stata ritrovata una medaglietta bronzea.  

We finished cleaning 2310 (a skull fragment, long bone, and various bone fragments) and agreed that the area was without significant context. The southeast corner of Area 2000/A was cleaned and two clusters of rock were uncovered, possibly indicating a cut.

We continued to expand 2309 (possible ossuary with two skulls) to follow a cut. Fragments of cranium and long bone were found, along with molars, glass, pottery, and shell fragments.

Lime layer 2359 was removed from burial 2308 and a photo was taken of the cut (-2252). In the southwest corner of 2000/B, a grounding cable was removed (2313) exposing a layer of burnt sediment.

North of 2313, a brick, slate, and rock fill was cleaned and partially removed (2273).

Near the southwest corner of 2000/A, the fill 2316 was removed to expose the partial burial USK 2315. A right and left femur, right and left tibia, and left fibula were exposed, photographed, and removed. GIS points were taken. 

Area 3000

Continua lo scavo della fossa rettangolare US – 3220, orientata W-E nella porzione sud-occidentale del Settore A. L’indagine del secondo livello di riempimento (US 3230) ha messo in evidenza una concentrazione di elementi litici e laterizi di piccola e media pezzatura privi di legante e collocati a ridosso della sezione ovest. Non possiamo ancora definire con chiarezza la funzione di questo accumulo di pietre, ma possiamo ipotizzare che US - 3230, di epoca ottocentesca, abbia intercettato una fossa più antica, il cui fondo è caratterizzato dai suddetti elementi litici di varie forme e dimensioni, murati a secco, il cui orientamento ed andamento sarà approfondito nei giorni seguenti. Nella porzione sud-orientale si è proceduto con la documentazione e la rimozione dell’individuo scheletrizzato Us 3276, orientato W-E e tagliato ad est dalla fossa rettangolare US -3107. Nel Settore A è iniziato lo scavo delle buche di forma irregolare UUSS – 3262, - 3265, che si intercettano nella porzione nord-orientale del settore; lungo la sezione meridionale dell’area continua la messa in evidenza dell’individuo Us 3279, orientato W-E, di cui si conserva solamente l’arto superiore, l’emitorace ed il coxale destri. È stata inoltre completata la messa in evidenza dello scheletro Us 3272, orientato N-S immediatamente a sud-ovest di USM 3073. Si tratta di un maschio adulto in buono stato di conservazione deposto supino all’interno di US -3273; del corpo rimane parte dell’avambraccio destro, flesso sul ventre, il coxale destro e parte di quello sinistro, mal preservato; gli arti inferiori sono distesi e simmetrici e si nota una certa pressione esercitata dall’alto sulle ginocchia, che appaiono schiacciate. La porzione superiore del corpo è stata tagliata ed asportata dalla fossa di spoliazione del muro medievale USM 3073. Nella giornata di domani si procederà con la documentazione e rimozione dell’individuo suddetto e con l’indagine degli altri contesti in entrambi i settori.

Section A

Charcoal and red clay layer was cleaned in section 3270. Took photographs, removed the bricks from 3270 that made up a floor in the hole, cleaned under 3270 and cleaned layer 3271.

Skeleton 3276 was cleaned, photographed, and removal of the skeleton began.

In the north east corner, remused cleaning suspected articulated skeleton oriented west east, established articulated tibia femur is from the right side of the skeleton, excavated looking for the left femur and pelvis but yet to find anything. Began to excavate westward to try to find the rest of the skeleton.

Section B

Finished removing fill from 2363, took a photogragph, and began removal of fill from 3258.

Finished cleaning and pedistoling skeleton 3272 in area 3211, took a photograph. There seems to be a humerus below the pelvic bone unrelated skeleton 3272. Look for arctulation for a tibia in section 3111and were unable to find any other bones. Partial crania was found and skattered bone in 3111 in the south west area of 3111.

Excavated burial US 3279 about two cm down. Found three unarticulated ribs, the left pelvic bone with a nail protruding from it, two more transverse cuts going eastward were found. Also disarticulated bones of a , likely, six year old were found.

Area 4000

Settore A

Nel terzo avanzamento stratigrafico del saggio 4800 del settore A si registra la medesima tipologia di ritrovamento archeologico sino ad ora identificata : reperti ossei parzialmente integri e ceramici relativi a classi grezze prive di rivestimento. Fra le evidenze osteologiche si registra il rinvenimento di un cranio privo di connessioni ed in stato frammentario.

Settori B e C

È proseguita, con la giornata di oggi, la rimozione di US 4117 e la messa in luce di US 4116. Da segnalare, nell’angolo nord occidentale del settore C, il rinvenimento di una serie di tagli circolari (US -4121, il primo di essi) e sub circolari che sembrano presentare degli allineamenti che, una volta verificati, consentiranno di formulare ipotesi relative alla loro genesi. Al momento le cronologie definite in base ai rinvenimenti ceramici confermano la sussistenza di stratificazioni relazionabili alla prima metà del XV secolo. È stato inoltre rinvenuto, lungo il limite settentrionale del settore C, quello che sembra essere il moncone terminale di una struttura orientata nord-sud. Se tale andamento verrà confermato, la suddetta struttura si rivelerà parallela all’alzato medievale rinvenuto durante la campagna di scavo dell’anno 2011 (US 4062). L’indagine prosegue.

This morning we cleaned the surfaces of all visible contexts in section B and C in site 4000. After taking pictures of our area, we took turns measuring the depth of each context using an optic level. We then began filling in context sheets for all current contexts. In section A, the test pit was cleaned and photos of the visible bones were taken. We measured the depth of each bone and then removed them from the soil. Pieces of pottery were also found during the cleaning of this area. In the afternoon in sections B and C, we evened the Southern wall. In the process we uncovered a small stone structure, the original function of which is still unknown. We also removed context 4117 in the North West corner of section C. We ended the day by doing a strong cleaning of the area.
