Inizia la seconda sessione della Field School Pozzeveri 2017!

Da oggi e per tre settimane 24 studenti provenienti da tutto il mondo continueranno le indagini archeologiche e bioarcheologiche del sito, suddivisi in quattro aree di scavo (2000, 3000, 5000 e 6000).

Qui sotto un'introduzione allo scavo della dott.ssa Anna Tremblay, supervisor dell'Area 2000.

Area 2000

Today's aim was cleaning and clearing area 2000. We started with light towel cleaning before pickaxing the entire area (not including the eastern corner already uncovered by the previous group). After pickaxing, we shovelled left over dirt and deep troweled until all areas were resonably flat. After hosing down the entire area, it became clear we most likely exposed several burials, juding by discolouration and density of soil in certain places. 

 The eastern corner (already excavated by previous group) was photographed and hosed down. Thought to contain another burial site but excavation proved otherwise. 

Area 3000

È iniziata la seconda sessione!!! Nella porzione sud-occidentale del Settore B, a ridosso della facciata USM 3380, continua la messa in luce dell’individuo adulto USK 3793, orientato W-E e deposto in decubito dorsale all’interno della fossa sepolcrale US – 3789. Poco più a nord si è proceduto con l’indagine della tomba US – 3798, contenente i resti mal conservati di un individuo adulto deposto supino, il cui lato sinistro del corpo sembra essere stato intercettato da una fossa sepolcrale di epoca successiva. Nella porzione settentrionale del settore sono stati rimossi i risparmi fra le varie tombe, in modo da mettere in luce lo strato argilloso US 3751, tagliato dalle sepolture di XI secolo.

today was the first day of session 2. after orientation and a lecture on general site history, there was a tour of all the areas on site. in area 3000, we cleaned all of sector b and scratched the surface to expose any differences in soil composition and color. After the cleaning, we focused on the continuation of exposing the skeleton in the southwest corner, exposing the cranium and searching for the rest of the remains on the southern border of the west/east trench, and pick axed about 25 cm down into the entire northern half of sector B to reach the constant level of yellow clay to expose potential grave/excavating interests. tomorrow, we will spray all of sector B with water to further expose the differences in soil. 

Area 5000

Nella giornata di oggi ci siamo dedicati alla porzione Est dell'area di scavo. Abbiamo ripulito la cresta di rasatura della struttura muraria che separa l'area 5000 dalla 4000 da detriti accumulatisi durante questi anni di scavo. In questo modo sarà possibile adattare le nuove scoperte alle osservazioni già fatte nelle stagioni di scavo precedenti. Nell'angolo nord est è emersa inoltre una costruzione in calcestruzzo, probabilmente utilizzata dall'età moderna fino ad alcuni decenni fa, al di sotto della quale dovremmo riuscire a individuare informazioni necessarie per comprendere al meglio le relazioni che intercorrono fra le varie strutture murarie presenti in quest'area. 

We began smoothing out, cleaning, and leveling out the newly exposed wall running north to south while also exploring the modern wall. Furthermore we extended the area of excavation along the eastern border so as to include the newly excavated wall. While digging we uncovered one tooth, two bones (one of which was a rib and the other unidentifiable), three nails (one of which was mondern), and a large amount of pottery sherds. Tomorrow we will continue excavating the wall and pick axe the remaining sections of the modern wall before taking a few photos for reference.

Area 6000

Una volta eseguita la documentazione topografica e fotografica, le lastre di ardesia (6173) poste a copertura della fossa US -6177, sono state parzialmente rimosse. Lo strato posto al di sotto di esse, US 6188, si caratterizza per la caotica disposizione di elementi ossei all'interno della matrice terrosa; segno di un'azione di disturbo avvenuta in seguito alla chiusura della tomba. Tra quest'ultima e la struttura meridionale USM 6004 prosegue lo scavo del riempimento 6186 per terminare la messa in luce dell'individuo USk 6184.

Today we continued the work of the previous excavators of session 1, uncovering more of the visible skeletons and uncovering new skeletons under the slate coverings we removed. In order to facilitate efficient excavation, we sprayed the unit with water in order to loosen the present dirt and providing accessability to more artifacts. Skeleton 88 was exposed when the flint rocks were removed. These bones were difficult to excavate because they were spongey and brittle and often broke into flakes when brushed upon. Also, around Skeleton 86 there were two pottery sherds found.
