Area 2000

Today in Area 2000 we cleaned with our trowels, West to East, and re-cleaned the Southeast corner of the area. At the same time this was occuring, three of us pickaxed and cleaned the Northeast corner and dug up an area of interest that turned out to be a lense. Next to the Northeast corner we also dug up an iron deposit. The Northeast quarter of the Area 2000 has now been closed and is beginning to be filled in. While this was occurring, the other three of us started cleaning the Northwest corner- an area of about 1 metre and 1/2 metre- that is also of interest. After heavy troweling the area and scraping the South/Southeast border, we received instruction to pickaxe the North wall. This was done to recover the North border along the edge of the concrete road which is most likely under the overlying concrete. During pickaxing, some small pieces of pottery were recovered and bagged with the area number and proper identification. We then cleaned the area again with trowels and brushes, picking up excess dirt on the surface. 

Area 3000

Lungo la facciata interna dell’abbazia di XII secolo (USM 3380) è stata completata la messa in luce dell’individuo USK 3793, orientato W-E e deposto in decubito dorsale all’interno della fossa sepolcrale US – 3789, nella porzione sud-occidentale del settore. L’inumato, probabilmente un maschio adulto, si presenta complessivamente in buono stato di conservazione, eccetto che per la porzione superiore del corpo, che, oltre ad essere stata intercettata ed asportata a metà torace dalla facciata USM 3380, risulta aver subito uno schiacciamento verso il basso, apparendo così in modo molto frammentario. La decomposizione del corpo sembra essere avvenuta in spazio parzialmente vuoto, come è confermato dall’appiattimento del torace e del bacino e dalla lassità delle articolazioni, soprattutto quelle del polso e della mano; gli arti inferiori mantengono invece la connessione anatomica, con le patelle nella posizione originaria ed i piedi ben stretti. Dall’analisi tafonomica si può ipotizzare la presenza originaria di una sorta di tavolato ligneo posto sia al di sopra del corpo dell’inumato, come a voler ricreare uno spazio vuoto attorno ad esso, sia sul fondo della tomba. Più a nord continua l’indagine della fossa sepolcrale US – 3798, orientata W-E lungo la trincea di epoca moderna, mentre nella porzione settentrionale del Settore B si procede con l’abbassamento dell’area, con lo scopo di mettere in luce i livelli più antichi sia della frequentazione dell’abbazia di XII secolo che della canonica di XI secolo.

Today we continued cleaning of skeleton 3793, previously mentioned as being near the southwestern corner of the foundation of the twelfth century facade, in order to take photographs for georeferencing and 3D photogrametry. We also took the coordinates of the reference pins around the burial and of the longbones, thorax, and coxal bones. We then began removal of the skeleton, beginning with the hands, feet, surprisingly intact patellae, and the right humerus. In the north west section of sector b the remainder of the twelfth century rock wall was exposed and generally cleaned. We have found two spots with potential excavation interest. One facing north to south against the western border of the wall and the other a very large cut oriented west/east. For the cranial bones found on the southern border of the west/east trench there was a bone that appears to be an upper arm longbone, but seems to be oriented vertically in the soil, meaning it is most likely part of the fill. There were no other remains found so far related to that skeleton. 

Area 5000

Continua la pulizia della porzione Est dell'area di scavo. Nell'angolo nord est è stata indivduata una camera di smaltimento delle acque realtive alle abitazioni di inizio '900 o fine '800. Anche se sono dati relativi alle ultime fasi di vita del complesso in questione, sono comunque interessanti al fine di verificare la continuità di vita del sito. Nella zona più merdionale invece si stanno scavando i piani stradali più moderni così da mettere in luce fase pavimentali più antiche e poi finalmente i livelli medievali relativi alle fasi che convivono con le strutture del chiostro. Nei prossimi giorni sarà possibile riportare gli allargamenti effettuati al pari con le evidenze stratigrafiche emerse ultimamente.

We began the day excavating the water/sewage pipe area. We found a door handle, nails, other various pieces of metal, pottery, and landfill trash. In the afternoon, we jackhammered the southern end of the site and pickaxed our way through the pavement and began dumping the fill into the modern day sewage system hole dug earlier today after a partial collapse and deemed unsafe. 

Area 6000

Quest'oggi è proseguita la messa in luce dello strato (US 6188) individuato al di sotto della copertura in ardesia (US 6173) e relativa alla tomba B del settore Sud dell'area. Contestualmente è proseguita la messa in luce dell'individuo USk 6184 (a sud del settore, a ridosso della struttura USM 6004) risultato tagliato dalla diagonalmente (NE-SO) dalla fossa realizzata per deporre il già rimosso individuo USk 6175.

Today we continued with the work we started yesterday, by lowering the ground further and discovering another strata within burial 86, which was indicated by a sharp colour and consistency change. The new strata was relatively empty and contained very few rock or brick inclusions, was yellow in colour and had a soft clay texture.
On burial 88 we recovered a section of the right maxilla with a canine and the first premolar still embedded, as well as two stray teeth, several carpal bones and several tarsal bones. The stratum was a medium brown with granular flecks of yellow soil and contained small stones and fragments of brick. In burial 86 we continued to expose the rest of the visible skeleton (vertebrae, scapula, clavicle, left ribs and pieces of a hand) and levelled the burial to a consistent height for photographing before extraction.
