Oggi sullo scavo abbiamo dato il benvenuto ai sette studenti della seconda sessione della Summer School in Osteoarchaeology and Paleopathology. 

Area 2000

Today in Area 2000, we heavy troweled and cleaned the entire area from West to East. We then sprayed down the area so that we were able to identify any potential spots of interest, indicated by changes in soil colour and texture. Once two potential burials and one trench were identified, we continued to excavate, uncovering some bone and excavating down further. We will continue to excavate those three areas tomorrow, hopefully uncovering more bone in the two burials and excavating down to the bottom layer of the trench.

Area 3000

Nella porzione settentrionale del settore è stata completata la rimozione dell’individuo USK 3829, orientato W-E all’interno di US – 3805. Più ad est continua la messa in luce dell’inumato sepolto nella fossa sepolcrale US – 3813. Lungo la porzione sud-occidentale della trincea moderna US – 3386 è stato terminato lo scavo di USK 3800, probabilmente una donna adulta in cattivo stato di conservazione, orientata W-E e deposta supina in US – 3798. Lo scheletro presenta un generale schiacciamento delle ossa verso il basso; il cranio, in apparizione frontale, è molto frammentato, così come il torace; l’arto superiore destro è disteso lungo il corpo, mentre quello sinistro è stato intercettato dalla trincea US – 3386, così come il femore dello stesso lato. La tibia destra è dislocata dal femore corrispondente, mentre quella sinistra è completamente ruotata, forse in seguito a movimenti dovuti a fattori tafonomici ed alla decomposizione del corpo in spazio vuoto.

Continued revealing and cleaning USK 3800 and took pictures for photogrammetry and GIS analysis in addition the context sheet for skeleton USK 3800 was begun. Before completely removing USK 3829 pictures of the pelvis and the thorax taken for photogrammetry. Continued to expose USK 3828. A lecture was presented by Dr. Valentina Giuffra on osteoarthritis.

Area 5000

Nella giornata di oggi ci siamo dedicati al settore D, in cui siamo riusciti a rimuovere definitivamente US 5433 e US 5434. Quest'ultimo costituisce un piano che presenta notevoli segni di usura, realizzato con la messa in opera di pietre di piccole e medie dimensioni immerse in una matrice argillosa di colore marrone. All'interno sono stati individuati frammenti ceramici e alcuni chiodi. US 5433 rappresenta invece uno strato costituito da laterizi e materiale lapideo che costituisce un sistema di drenaggio utile per i piani di vita che vi si impostavano. Questo è stato realizzato con l'utilizzo di materiale da costruzione scartato durante le fasi di spoliazione delle strutture abbazziali. 

Today area 5000 finished exposing the rocks and marble covering the square area previously in 4000 and took multiple photos for reference. After this was done the team pick axed the area again removing the layer of rocks in an attempt to allow us to excavate the next layer underneath. This layer consists of slate and is believed to be the remains of a roof that collapsed previously. Under this roofing layer we plan to search for any indication of monk burials which we hope to uncover. However before this can be achieved we must first outline the slate roofing and document it accordingly.

Area 6000

Quest'oggi è terminata la messa in luce degli individui USk 6182, USk 6199 ed USk 6201; nella giornata di domani si provvederà alla documentazione fotografica, topografica e fotogrammetrica per poi procedere alla loro rimozione.

Today we excavated in unit 6196 and exposed further the skeleton previously discovered.  In preperation for photography by rapidly exposing the feet amd the pelvis.  However, we were subjected to time constraints and did not complete the photo today.  In burial 6199, we continued to excavate and expose the skeleton.  This proved to be more difficult than expected since the bones were not as well preserved as others.  We also removed a large root that surrounded the bones of the skeleton.  In burial 6201, we continued to expose more of the skull and ribs, as well as preparing the skeleton for a photograph.  In addition, there was a tour given on site to explain the differences between each sections on site.
