Area 2000

Dopo la pulizia generale effettuata sull’allargamento Ovest son stati individuati quattro tagli sepolcrali, due dei quali (US -2607 e US -2612) probabilmente facenti riferimento ad epoca medievale.
US -2607 si colloca nella porzione nord orientale con orientamento  canonico medievale Ovest Est e una forma abbastanza regolare ellissoidale. Dopo una prima rimozione del riempimento (US 2609) è stato possibile osservare la presenza dello scheletro in connessione USk 2608 malamente preservato.
US -2612 è posto nella porzione centro meridionale sempre con orientamento Ovest Est e con forma ellissoidale regolare. Il riempimento US -2614) è caratterizzato da una matrice limosa e molti inclusi litici di grandi dimensioni misti a grumi di malta disposti su tutta la superficie per una profondità di circa 10 cm; al di sotto è stato possibile determinare la presenza dello scheletro in deposizione primaria USk 2613, che invece si preserva ottimamente.
US -2610 si dispone subito a Nord Est, orientato Ovest Est e posto ad una quota leggermente più alta. La sepoltura è intercettata ad Ovest da altre sepolture Ottocentesche coeve. Anche in questo caso è stata iniziata la rimozione del riempimento e la parziale messa in uce di Usk 2602.
US -2604 è un taglio irregolare posto nella porzione centro meridionale con orientamento Nord Sud e disturbata a Nord. In questo caso si tratta di una sepoltura dell’ultima fase d’uso de cimitero.
Domani si procederà alla messa in luce degli scheletri.

Following the removal of two relatively complete skeletons last week, we began today by cleaning the surface of sector B and the western expansion of sector A, wetting down the area to look for potential cuts. GIS points and photographs were taken of the trench. Excavation began on five potential grave cuts. One contained scattered bone fragments and two rusted nails in the fill. A photo and GIS coordinates were taken for this cut and finds. In another cut, a skeleton in poor condition was exposed oriented east-west, suggesting that the grave may be medieval. The skeleton was complete other than missing both feet. The third cut contained fragmented tibiae and fibulae, oriented north-south, included in the south part of the mass conglomeration of mid19th century remains. The fourth grave cut opened today included the right tibia and fibula and just the left fibula, oriented east-west. The final grave cut was located close to the northern wall of the church and was oriented east-west.

Area 3000

La quarta settimana di scavo si è aperta con la pulizia generale del Settore B, che ha messo in evidenza la presenza di alcuni tagli prevalentemente di forma ellittica e con orientamento diverso. In particolare nella porzione meridionale del settore è emersa una situazione stratigrafica piuttosto complessa ed intricata, determinata evidentemente dalla presenza di numerose fosse sepolcrali che si intercettano e tagliano vicendevolmente, dando origine ad un “groviera” di tombe che saranno indagate nei prossimi giorni.

Today in Area 3000, we finished cleaning the cuts of the two graves we worked on last week to photograph and document these cuts. We then cleaned the entire area to discover new cuts of graves. Then we opened three new graves, two in the southern part of sector B, and one in the northern part. In the southern part, we found a grave close to the trench that contains many large bones, with at least two partially articulated individuals. The other grave we opened contained a slate topping that was probably a grate covering. We have uncovered most of the lower limbs in this grave.  In the northern part, we discovered one poorly preserved individual in the grave with many scattered bones. Tomorrow we will continue to excavate and document these graves.

Area 5000

Nella giornata di oggi ci siamo concentrati sulla porzione più occidentale dell'area, dove sono state individuate numerose buche circolari di dimensioni variabili. Sono state documentate e scavate tre buche dai diametri di circa 20 cm (US -5197, US -5208 e US -5209), l'ultima delle quali intercettava un taglio molto più grande, circa 70 cm di diametro, denominata US -5198. Non sono stati rinvenuti reperti al loro interno, il che rende difficile una datazione precisa e puntuale di queste tracce in negativo. Sappiamo comunque che sono obliterate da contesti tardo medievali, il che ci permette di porle in questo contesto storico.

Returning from midterm break, Area 5000 continued projects from the previous week. Once we cleaned the entire western side, we further cleaned and delineated US 5202, the hole containing a fill of brick, slate and stone. Two nails and a few pieces of green glass were found in the hole this morning. 
We similarly excavated, US 5184, the hole with the cut in it, and no notable finds were found. Once the western side of the area was cleaned again, context photographs were taken along with a general photo.  We then smoothed and evened out the edge along the western side of the area before cleaning it again.  The rest of our day’s efforts were spent pickaxing US 5129, the layer between USM 5117, the stone wall, and trench US -5163.  Approximately 5-7 cm were removed to bring the area to the same level as the trench.  Notable finds from this section include several nails, pottery sherds, and animal bones.  This area will be cleaned again tomorrow before we begin to clear the eastern portion of the site.

Area 6000

Nella giornata di oggi sono state individuate ed iniziate ad essere indagate, tre buche nella metà nord del settore A : US -6039, -6041 e -6037. Terminata la rimozione dello strato US 6029, a ridosso della struttura USM 6004, ci si è focalizzati su quest'ultima e su USM 6005, una realizzazione muraria cronologicamente successiva alla prima e da mettere in relazione con la facciata della chiesa medievale.

Three circular pits were excavated today, all of which cut into layer 6023. One of the circular pit was around 20cm xv20cm across and located in the the northeastern part of 6003 near the edge of the trench. It was covered by 6003, and was likely fabricated to serve as a fire pit. Another pit was located in the south western portion of 6003. The cut was -6039, and 6040 was the fill; and at the bottom of the cut was a large oval rock, indicating the end of the pit. The third pit was also in the southwestern part of 6003, near a large -6029. it was likely created to serve as a posthole for column.

After uncovering the pits, we divided up, and began cleaning out different areas. Area 6006, is the area that includes the southern end of the wall and the north end of what used to be a parking lot. We began pick-axing and removing the layers. Eventually we found a stone slab, that may possibly be flooring, but most likely another lithic tomb. Along the inside of the wall, area 6009, there a fragments of bone that may be a potential burial. This week we will continue to excavate areas 6006 and 6009.
