Area 3000

Nella porzione sud-orientale del Settore B è stata completata la messa in luce della riduzione di resti osteologici US 3891, disposta lungo le pareti della fossa sepolcrale US – 3887 e immediatamente al di sopra del corpo dell’inumato USK 3889, in connessione anatomica e deposto in decubito dorsale. Nella porzione centro-settentrionale del settore continua l’esposizione degli individui  USK 3885 e USK 3905, entrambi orientati  W-E e deposti supini rispettivamente in US -3901 e – 3895. Nel corso della giornata di domani si procederà con la rimozione della riduzione US 3891 e con il completamento della messa in luce e della documentazione dell’individuo USK 3889.

Within grave 3891 the 3889 skeleton was completely uncovered, photographed, and prepped for GIS measurements. There are suspected three to four individuals in the grave. In 3902 the grave was leveled out and the majority of the remaining skeleton was found and the bones have begun to be exposed. Finally in 3896 around the skeleton has been leveled out but has yet to be fully exposed. The cranium and the feet are currently in the process of being exposed. Julia was in osteo lab and worked on cleaning skeletal remains from the 2012 season of excavations.

Area 5000

Dopo aver ripulito la porzione settentrionale dell'area 5000 sono emerse alcune nuove evidenze stratigrafiche; nello specifico si tratta di tre piccole buche circolari di 5-10 cm di diametro. Queste sono probabilmente da riferire all'attività della fornace da campana già individuata nella stagione di scavo 2015. Alla stessa fase sembra appartenere una quarta buca, sempre circolare, di 20 cm di diametro. Un ultimo taglio a sezione rettangolare è emerso nella zona centrale dell'area circondato da una singolare concentrazione di ciottoli immersi nella stessa matrice argillosa che costituisce lo strato US 5352 che ricopre l'intera superficie dell'area. Nella porzione Sud-Est è stata messa in luce una fossa a sezione obliqua di grandi dimensioni e intercettata dalla struttura muraria USM 5042. La fossa presenta delle lastre di ardesia disposte orizzontalmente rispetto al terreno individuate subito al di sotto del primo riempimento. Le lastre potrebbero essere state posizionate come copertura di un'eventuale sepoltura ma prima di poter avanzare ipotesi sarà necessario esplorare ulteriormente questa situazione. La fossa è stata tagliata a sua volta da un'altra buca sub-circolare di dimensioni molto ridotte rispetto alla prima e al suo interno sono stati individuati finora due crani parzialmente conservati. Anche questo riempimento è stato alterato durante la realizzazione di USM 5042 per cui risulta impossibile osservare le reali informazioni di queste evidenze stratigrafiche. Lo scavo approfondito dell'area sarà comunque in grado di chiarire la natura di questa complessa situazione. Nel settore D invece, posizionato nella zona più orientale dell'area è stato individuato un taglio a ridosso della struttura muraria che costituisce la parete esterna del chiostro. Questa sembra avere una forma irregolare e il suo riempimento è costituito da frammenti di scisto e laterizi immersi in una matrice argillosa. Per quanto si necessiti di più informazioni sembra che il taglio sia stato effettuato successivamente alla struttura muraria, probabilmente durante le fasi di spoliazione di questa. Di notevole interesse è stato il ritrovamento all'interno di questa fossa di un dado da gioco in osso, molto piccolo (circa 0.5 cm) e in ottimo stato di conservazione.

The students in section D started by cleaning the area and scraping down another centimeter and then cleaned the section again. A picture was then taken of the section; the students then dug the fill that was found in the corner. A die was found, and near the wall a tooth. Also near the wall a piece of what at first appeared to be pottery but was revealed to be a frontal bone of the cranium was found. Directly below this was the left temporal bone. This was identified by a mastoid process, sigmoid sulcus, and a petrous part of the temporal bone. The fill was extended outwards to connect with another previously excavated area and in this newly excavated area two metal nails were found. The students in section C finished excavating the holes that were started last Friday.  An arm bone was excavated, the students also continued to excavate the cranium that was found last week. Once it was uncovered, another cranium was revealed. The slate pieces were photographed and removed, revealing several bone chips and a piece of pottery. The soil beneath it was sampled. The student in the Osteo lab cleaned a left humerus and a cranium. Within the cranium, multiple bones which make up the edges of the cranial cavity were revealed including a partial sphenoid, a petrous pyramid, among others.

Area 6000

Prosegue lo scavo e messa in luce dei riempimenti e sepolture rinvenuti durante la prima settimana di scavo. A ovest è stato determinato il limite occidentale del taglio US -6207 il quale, a sua volta, ha intercettato una seconda fossa sepolcrale che si sviluppa sotto la sezione ovest dell'area. All'interno del taglio, rimosso il riempimento US 6208, sta venendo messo in luce un accumulo di ossa sulla porzione centrale della fossa, US 6215, il quale pare coprire la sepoltura stessa. Sul resto dell'area prosegue la messa in luce degli individui già parzialmente esposti in precedenza, con la scoperta, lungo il margine orientale del riempimento US 6209, di un taglio circolare (US -6216) riempito da frammenti cranici, pietre e laterizi (US 6217) che va a intercettare le estremità distali degli arti inferiori della sepoltura afferente al suddetto riempimento.

Today in area 6000, we continued to clean and excavate the three separate burials. Upon further excavation of 6208, we determined the cut of the burial. The topmost cut was identified as being between two sections of fill as opposed to empty clay, which made it difficult to determine initially. It was ultimately determined that the burial we were working on was cut into an older burial that was directly adjacent to it. We continued to carefully expose previously discovered bones such as vertebrae, ribs, pelvis, and long bones using the brush and whittling tools. In the lower half of the area, we found a right femur with a connected tibia. The leg bones were rotated such that the bottom section faced upwards, suggesting that the body had been moved to the side upon reduction. In light of this discovery, we established that this area was indeed a burial involving a partial reduction and labeled this new sections as 6215.

In the lower section of burial 6204 we continued excavating the feet and pelvis, now reaching the vertebrae, which are exposed. In the upper section of burial 6204 we continued to expose the vertebrae and the ribs. The ribs are clearly now visible and in articulation with the vertebrae. Some of the ribs appear to be cut. The cavity of the skull has been cleared of packed dirt and debris.

In burial 6209, the left femur which was cut and left hand bones were exposed. The right pelvis was also excavated as well as several ribs and the right clavicle. We also continued to level out the fill in the burial. The partial cranium that is located within burial 6209 near the cut femurs has now been labeled burial 6217 and was completely cleared out today. This burial cuts through the femurs of burial 6209.

One group member spent the day in the osteology lab cleaning bone fragments which included a left femur, left tibia, right fibula, and vertebral fragments. Another group member spent the day in GIS lab learning how to setup and take points with the Total Station, creating those points in AutoCAD, using photoshop to remove any distortions from the photographs taken of the site, and then using GIS to put all of this information together into a geographic and highly accurate map of the site.
