Area 3000

In seguito alla rimozione degli individui USK 3905 e 3885, nella porzione settentrionale dell’area si è proceduto con l’abbassamento generale del settore, con lo scopo di individuare i livelli di frequentazione immediatamente precedenti alle fasi cimiteriali di XI secolo e quindi alla costruzione della chiesa più antica. Nella porzione meridionale del settore sono stati individuati i limiti di ciò che rimane di una fossa sepolcrale (US – 3840), orientata W-E, il cui riempimento US 3841 risulta intercettato, a nord e a sud, da altre due tombe e a sud-ovest dalla buca US – 3830. 

We scraped clean all of Area 3000 section B for photogrammetry and measurements. Two cuts were identified in the southern portion, -3840 and -3879. We began investigating both cuts. The smaller of the two, -3879, yielded nothing. The second cut, -3840, was leveled and a new layer of strata was identified underneath. We also started to level the walls of the burial cuts on the northern section with pickaxes. Julia spent half of the day in GIS lab. Danielle and Lexi were in Osteo lab all day.

Area 5000

Continua lo scavo dei riempimenti messi in luce nei giorni precedenti. Nello specifico si tratta di US 5542 e US 5543, due fosse dal profilo ellittico visibili per una piccola porzione perchè intercettate dalla struttura muraria USM 5042. Quest'ultima costituisce il perimetrale esterno del corridoio del chiostro e una relazione cronologica così diretta tra le due differenti fasi ci permette di identificare le fosse sepolcrali come appartenenti ad un periodo precedente alla costruzione degli edifici abbaziali. Nella porzione nord-orientale invece sono emerse altre 4 buche di palo dal diametro che varia tra i 20 cm e i 25 cm probabilmente in relazione alla stessa fase descritta sopra.

Today the students in section C continued digging both holes, looking for the presence of bone, or the bottom of the holes. In the northern hole, pieces of pottery were found as well as a bone fragment that will be excavated tomorrow. The students in the southern hole uncovered and cranium, and a long bone. The students in section D continued working in the cut, taking down the entire area 6-7 cm and expanding the hole to the north and south. During this expansion a femur was uncovered as well as the bone which was previously identified as an animal rib, but has been re-identified as a human long bone. The long bone as well as part of the femur was removed. A large piece of flint was also uncovered.

Area 6000

Nella giornata di oggi la squadra si è concentrata sulla sezione orientale del settore sud, precisamente sull'area inclusa tra le tombe a cassa UUSSMM 6062, 6194 e 3047, rispettivamente a nord, sud ed est. Ad ovest i limiti dello strato indagato (US 6217) sono rappresentati dai tagli UUSS -6211 e -6205. US 6217 è uno strato argilloso e compatto, con forte presenza di frammenti ossei, litici e laterizi nella matrice ed è ubicato nella zona immediatamente prospicente alla facciata dell'abbazia, quindi ad alta densità sepolcrale fin quando l'area cimiteriale è stata in uso. Questo spiega perchè su ogni suo lato esso sia tagliato ed intercettato da sepolture più recenti e, verosimilmente, indica che anche eventuali sepolture rinvenute al di sotto di esso potranno non trovarsi in perfette condizioni. Sul lato occidentale del settore è invece stata ultimata la rimozione dell'individuo USk 6219, del quale sono stati trovati unicamente gli arti inferiori e l'avambraccio destro, a causa di successive intercettazioni relative a più recenti sepolture. Contestualmente continua la messa in luce dell'individuo USk 6220, allineato al suddetto USk 6219 e parzialmente coperto dalla sezione ovest dell'area 6000.

In 6219, photographs had been completed last week. We therefore started with the context sheet. Once that was completed, we began to remove the skeletal remains. By the end of the day this was completed, and we then moved on to leveling out parts of the more recent burial that cut into 6219.

Today we continued to level the ground in 6217, removing rocks and loose, broken bone fragments, which includes all of the context surrounding burial 6204. Photographs were taken once the top layer of clay was removed and the entire area was level. After photographs were taken we began to expose the skeletal remains within the context by carefully removing the dirt around the remains. There appears to be one complete burial designated 6221 and a reduction of long bones situated on top of burial 6221.
