Area 3000

Nella porzione settentrionale del settore continua lo scavo delle buche individuate nei giorni precedenti, mentre a sud la pulizia del settore in seguito alla rimozione dello strato US 3935 ha permesso l’individuazione dei limiti di altre buche di diverse dimensioni e forme, sia circolari, che quadrate, come US – 30006, posizionata nella porzione centrale.

Area 5000

Oggi sono stati scavati completamente US -5045 e US -5047, due tagli che intercettano la struttura muraria USM 5042 e già individuati durante le scorse campagne di scavo. Sul fondo delle fosse si osserva la cresta di rasatura della struttura che si ricollega ai setti murari precedentemente esposti.

Today, team members leveled down section C, East to West to see if there was anything of significance had been overlooked. Meanwhile, the North-Eastern hole in the wall was cleaned for photogrammetry, GIS positioning, and documentation. Finally, a hole in the wall North to the latter was dug to determine whether the wall connects. Indeed, it was determined that the destruction trench does connect to the wall. While leveling down the trench, we stumbled upon a piece of marble. To be continued tomorrow.

Area 6000

 Prosegue la messa in luce dell’individuo USk 6236 nella porzione orientale del settore sud dell’area. L’individuo risulta privo di cranio e omeri, segno di successive azioni di asportazione dovute alla deposizione di altri individui.

Today in area 6000 we continued the extraction of fill 6236 to further expose skeleton 6217. We also potentially identified the edges of the cut on both at the head and the foot of the skeleton.

PORZIONE NORD

Nella porzione settentrionale dell’area si è proceduto con la pulizia generale dello strato US 6112, a matrice argillosa di colore giallastro e di consistenza compatta, esteso su tutta la superficie di scavo. Le indagini si concentreranno prevalentemente  ad est, con lo scopo di mettere in luce i limiti reali della tomba a cassa litica USM 6123 ed i livelli di deposizione delle sepolture all’interno di essa.

Excavation of the remaining holes in the Northern Section of Area 3000 B was completed, then Section B of area 6000 was cleaned, photographed, and GIS coordinates were taken of the georeferencing markers for the section. Then the first 4 cm of fill 6501 was removed from lithic coffin 6123 . The fill was mostly rocks and bricks with scattered bones and bone fragments which have been partially excavated with a large number of unidentified bone fragments removed thus far. Jess and Konrad were in GIS lab and Clair was in osteology lab.

Area 7000

Nella giornata di oggi abbiamo continuato con la rimozione di US 7002, uno strato a matrice mista, grigio e ricco di materiale macerioso. Lo strato copre una situazione piuttosto complessa che dovrà essere indagata nei prossimi giorni.

Team members wet down the area, in order to better see the different layers to ascertain which part of the trench needed to be leveled down more. We then trowelled down the East side of the trench, in order to try and reach a uniform level across the entire area. After wetting down the trench again, we discovered, due to some darker patches of soil (indicating water retention), that the level of the trench was not entirely uniform. We therefore trowelled these areas again. Tiny sherds of pottery were found but since the layer is of no proper context, they are of no archaeological significance.
