Resoconto della giornata di scavo

Area 6000

Area 6000/A - The north west area continued excavation of two individuals and exposed cranium of individual with a goal to find their right stratigraphic position.

In the same time, north east area is coming to an end with exposing the skeleton. In this area are found ribs and parts of left hand in the pelvis. Our archaeologists have taken pictures  and after that GIS. After exposing the bones, it was concluded that grave consists of more than one individuals.

South west area continued the excavation of long bones and thorax.

South east area  continued excavation of the second grave in order to better undestand stratigraphic position of previously found skeletons and scattered bones. At the moment two craniums are exposed.

Area 6000/B - Today, we finished exposing the skeleton, 6253, in grave 6250. The pelvis and sacrum were uncovered completely as well as unidentified fragments in the upper torso. Photographs were then taken for photogrammetry and points were taken with the total station. Tomorrow morning we plan on removing the bones from the ground and checking the fill again for any grave goods and bones that were left behind. In 6242, we located the proximal ends of both tibia and the proximal end of one fibula, indicating that more excavation in that area is required. The pelvis was also cleaned. Also in that area, parts of the ribcage was exposed and cleaned. The skull was also cleaned. Tomorrow we plan on continuing to expose the rest of the skeleton.

Area 7000

Today, we used the pickaxes in the center of the area. We were working from North to South, attempting to expose the layer beneath the layer of bricks and mortar. We found many pieces of pottery and glass, some of which are very modern but are mixed in with other pieces that are from earlier time periods. A partial nail was found, as well as modern glass. In the same layer, a piece of an ancient floor was found. It appears to be a sort of brick created by using a mixture of materials, typical of what would be used in ancient Rome. In the northwestern section, about a meter south of the lithic tomb, we exposed a layer that contained a red stain, indicating possible fire action.
