Area 6000

Settore Nord

Nella porzione settentrionale del settore continua l'esposizione di un individuo subadulto deposto supino all'interno della cassa litica USM 6123, il cui lato sinistro del corpo sembra essere stato intercettato da una sepoltura di epoca successiva. A sud di USM 6123 è stata completata la messa in luce dei resti osteologici sparsi (US 6529 e US 6532) posizionati al di sopra dell'individuo USK 6531 (in US - 6530) e USK 6535, in connessione anatomica. Di US 6529 fanno probabilmente parte alcune delle ossa provenienti dai corpi di almeno tre individui (USK 6533, 6534 e 6535) intercettati, più a nord, da US - 6530 e riposizionate all'interno della tomba stessa. Interessante è stato il ritrovamento di una piccola fibbia in ferro di forma quadrangolare, proveniente da tale contesto. Ad est è stata completata la messa in luce degli inumati USK 6516 e USK 6525, orientati W-E.

In the northwest burials, we finished exposing the two present individuals in order to document them in situ. Then, in the southwest burial, we began excavating the lower limbs and the vertebrae of the individual. In the northeast section, we continued to expose the right side of the skeletal remains. While excavating, we began hypothesizing that the left side of the skeleton/burial was cut by the burial directly above it, which was removed at the end of last week, as it does not seem to be entirely present. Finally, in the southeast burial, we documented the four individuals and started removing them, starting with the bones layered directly on top.

Settore Sud

Terminata la rimozione dell’individuo USk 6253 nella porzione centrale del settore, è proseguita a est la messa in luce dell’individuo USk 6251, un adulto di sesso femminile, in buono stato di conservazione e sito sul limite occidentale del settore, in una zona in cui, durante le precedenti campagne di scavi, un numero molto elevato di sepolture (anche direttamente relazionate le une con le altre) era già stato indagato. L’individuo presenta i piedi sovrapposti, in posizione accavallata, probabile testimonianza della presenza di un sudario avvolgente al momento dell’inumazione.

Today, we continued to excavate the skeletons in 6242, and 6251. In 6242, we continued to expose the legs and upper body, as well as excavating metatarsals. We also attempted to define the interfaces. In 6251, we finished exposing the skeleton and took photographs and points with the total station. Elevation points were also taken. The context sheet was also completely filled. We also found scattered bones in the lithic tomb, and are working to expose them. We found vertebrae, long bones, teeth, and other assorted fragments. Tomorrow, we plan on continuing to expose the skeletons in both 6242 and the lithic tomb.

Area 7000

Continua lo scavo di US 7029. E' stata rimossa la porzione occidentale dello strato il quale sembra avere uno spessore di circa 10-15 cm. Al suo interno sono stati ritrovati frammenti ceramici di XVIII secolo, ossa animali e chiodi. Nei prossimi giorni ci concentreremo sulla porzione orientale, così da esporre dei livelli precedenti alle attività di livellamento e sistemazione delle macerie relative agli edifici abbaziali.

We pickaxed 3-5 cm deeper in the southern half of area 7000. Multiple pieces of pottery were found from various time periods in the 7029 layer. Towards the center of the southern most area, a piece of metal was found. It is suspected this piece was below layer 7029 and it is a door hinge.
