Area 6000/A - Today in area 6000 North we completed the excavation of the skeleton in the northeast portion, after which we learned how to thoroughly document the grave for the site’s records. In the southwest portion we continued to excavate the fragmented skeleton, the thorax has been partially revealed but is fragile and requires careful handling lest it fragment further. The southeast area continued to excavate the cranium of an individual as well as the fibula, discovering portions of the skeleton may be further underneath. The northwest section continued previous excavation, discovering a cranium that appears to be crushed. The afternoon was too hot for excavation, so our area went to a lecture on using GIS for healthscaping Bologna before and after the Black Death. We concluded with the remainder of our lecture on documenting the site before cleaning the area in preparation for tomorrow’s session.
Area 6000/B - Today, we began to fill out the context sheet for the skeleton 6253, and plan on completing it tomorrow as well as removing the bones from the ground. We also cleaned the bones in 6240, and exposed the femurs in 6251. The right femur needs to be completely exposed tomorrow, as well as the rest of the skeleton in general. The thorax and vertebrae were also partly exposed in 6240 today, and tomorrow, we plan on continuing to expose them and the rest of the skeleton as well.
The day started off with a scan of the area, to check if any changes had occurred from any impacts from the weather. In the morning the group helped to clear up soil that had been picked up by Alan using the pick axe, ensuring a quick scan over the loose dirt to check for any pieces of ceramics, glass or bone that might have been picked up during the process. The dig was mostly done in the middle of the area, creating a square shape in the center of the area. During the afternoon, the group all spread along the North of the area, from west to east, and began cleaning from North to South of the section. The cleaning process was using our trowels to bring out any rocks and layers that had not yet been seen, and to prepare the ground for when it needed to be sprayed down.
