Area 6000

SETTORE NORD

L'indagine della porzione occidentale del settore ha messo in luce una situazione piuttosto complessa dove, in uno spazio molto ristretto, si concentrano almeno tre sepolture ed i residui di una quarta, intercettata ad ovest e ad est da tombe ad essa successive. In particolare USK 6524, mal preservato, sembra essere l'inumato più recente: si tratta probabilmente di un maschio adulto orientato W-E, di cui rimangono le estremità distali degli avambracci, la mano destra, i coxali, il sacro, i femori e la porzione prossimale delle tibie e delle fibule. La porzione superiore del corpo prosegue al di sotto del limite e della sezione dell'area di scavo. Le ginocchia sono leggermente più in basso rispetto alle altre ossa e la tibia destra è in parte appoggiata sopra il femore sinistro dell'individuo USK 6526, sepolto immediatamente a sud di USK 6524 e ad esso precedente. Tale posizione potrebbe essere il risultato di movimenti avvenuti in seguito alla decomposizione dell'inumato USK 6526 ( e forse anche di un tavolato ligneo posto al di sopra del corpo). Si sarebbe quindi creato un vuoto che avrebbe fatto collassare parte degli arti inferiori di USK 6524. Lo stesso processo tafonomico sembra aver interessato anche gli inumati USK 6526 e USK 6559. La decomposizione del corpo di USK 6559 avrebbe causato lo sprofondamento di parte degli arti inferiori di USK 6526: le tibie si sono disconnesse dai rispettivi femori e sono sprofondate più in basso, scivolando verso l'interno, ravvicinandosi l'una all'altra. I piedi di USK 6526 sono inoltre sovrapposti a quelli dell'inumato sottostante, USK 6559, che sarà esposto nei prossimi giorni.

6000S

The skeleton of 6276 has been excavated to the point where all the bones are somewhat visible, including the lower limbs and feet. It is still difficult to excavate due to the site being damp and wet. The most progress was done on the ribs and the vertebrae, which are fragile and crumble easily. We hope to be able to remove the skeleton this week. 

6000N

We continued to expose the pelvis, femora, right lower arm and hand of the 2nd deposited individual in the grave in the northwest area of the section. Found another long bone of another individual under the femur of this indidivual. Determined that on the left side the femur of the 2nd deposited individual does articulate with the associated pelvis. Continued exposing the bones of the other two identified individuals in the cut. Partially filled out the context sheet for the 1st and 2nd deposited individuals. 

Area 7000

Tuesday's excavation consisted mainly of exposing more of the burned clay layer in the suspected fire activity area, as well as more excavations of the furnace area. These tasks took up most of the day and resulted in a few pottery sherds, a few pieces of bronze or iron slag, and one decayed metal tool (maybe an axe or hammer) found in the eastern trench. By the end of the day, all of the red/orange surfaces had been exposed. Work on the furnace feature will continue tomorrow.
